Churchill Chatter - Issue 16, March 17, 2023

Dear Churchill Road Families,

It was wonderful to see many of you at Carnaval last week. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we are well on our way to making our new outdoor classroom and community space a reality.  Thank you to our staff and PTA leadership for a wonderful evening!  Thank you to the many parents below who worked so hard to make the evening a success.

  • The PTA board led by Erin Moreno!  Thank you for your vision!
  • Leigh Lewis and Zainab Javaid Vayas, who planned all of the details of the event
  • FJ Hueber, our Live Auction MC
  • Maggie Moran for coordinating auctions
  • Vivian Lee for overseeing sponsorships
  • Christie Buschmann for her participation and institutional knowledge of running PTA events
  • Shelli Bushman and Diena Johnston, who coordinated grade-level baskets
  • Committee Members - Erin Patel, Sarah DiMonte, Stacy LaRosa, Emily Lena, Alex Jones, and Hannah Bean.

Our students and teachers continue to be involved in a variety of learning experiences!  Last week, the 6th grade students participated in “Inquiry Night”. This was the culminating event celebrating their two months of research, writing, and collaborating on an authentic world issue!  The presentations were thought-filled and professionally presented.  Next week is our beloved 1st grade musical, “How does our Garden grow!”  They are working so hard and we are all excited for their performance!

We are in the midst of planning for the 2023-2024 school year.  Churchill Road families may assist in this process by sharing information about their students for class placements next year.  We have created a form, linked below, for families to use; the deadline for submission of this optional form is March 31, 2023.

Additionally, we hope you will spread the word about our upcoming Kindergarten Orientation on April 13, from 2-3 p.m.  Please share this information with your friends and neighbors, so we have a better understanding of numbers for our in-coming Kindergarten program!  Thank you in advance for your help in this area!

Sincerely,

Ms. Jen Niccolls and Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr

Parent Input for 2023-2024

As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, our staff collaborates regarding student placements.  A variety of factors such as student personalities, friendships, and academic abilities are considered as we create our new classes.  Other factors impacting the decision-making process of student class assignments are new student enrollments and teachers moving to a new assignment.

Churchill Road families may assist in this process by sharing insights. Please note the following when providing information. We do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement.  This includes hints that reference specific teachers.  We cannot guarantee friend requests nor exceptions for other students whereby there may be a conflict. We do our best to create a positive learning year for your child.

Please provide your input by submitting this form  as it will ensure we have your request.  Please do not email us additional information.  Completion of the form is optional: however, the deadline for any correspondence is March 31, 2023. Thank you for your input.

Thank You Wheat's Landscape

wheats

Churchill Road is so fortunate to to have Wheat's Landscape take care of our school grounds. If you have been to the school lately, you may have noticed how beautiful the school looks.  Recently, representatives from Wheat's, including Churchill Road parent Jenni Kiefhaber and her colleague Matthew Gryskevich, shared their knowledge of plants and their life cycles with our first grade students.  Students got to experience plants firsthand and even received some seed packets from Wheat's to grow their own plants at home.

Thank you Wheat's!

Family-Facing Curriculum for Core Content Being Added to Public FCPS Website

The curriculum overviews and unit standards from the planning and pacing guides have been posted on the FCPS public web and shared with the School Board.  The goal is to provide families a comprehensive overview of what students are learning and when they are learning it.

An introductory paragraph on each grade level or course page includes the following statements: “The objectives and outcomes for each unit are common across FCPS and based on the Virginia Standards of Learning. The pacing by quarter and by week provides an example of how the curriculum can be organized throughout the year. Teacher teams may adjust the pacing or order of units to best meet the needs of students.”

Information will be updated at the start of each school year to reflect curriculum updates. To access the grade level and/or course web pages directly, first search for the level within the Academics page, select grade level or content, and click on Year at a Glance.
