Dental students provide dental screening at Mason Crest ES

Mason Crest Elementary Students Receive Dental Screenings

Dental Careers Level 2 students spent two days at Mason Crest Elementary School in March providing dental screening, oral hygiene and nutrition education to students in the kindergarten and 1st grades.  Students even used their language skills to reach those for whom English is their second language.  Earlier in the year, dental students also conducted dental screenings and gave oral hygiene instruction at Sleepy Hollow Elementary.  In total, the dental students provided dental support to 300+ kindergartners and 1st graders this academic year.

Unexpected Work Based Learning Experience for Pharmacy Students

Pharmacy students at VCU/Inova Pharmacy

Students from the Falls Church Academy Pharmacy Tech Level 2 class visited the VCU School of Pharmacy at Inova Fairfax on Tuesday, March 9 and had the chance to see and learn about the behind the scenes of pharmaceutical production and distribution at the hospital pharmacy system.  All went as planned until the pharmacy department held a last minute “Pharmacy Safety Stand Down” meeting at which representatives from Pharmacy were asked to provide ideas that could help them provide pharmaceutical care throughout the hospital more efficiently.  Students were able to stay and listen to the productive conversations provided with ideas that will be implemented in the near future.  All of them had the opportunity to see the Portrait of A Graduate skills at work in this dynamic workforce setting.  All students were seniors and already committed to a college next year, in addition, all are interested in the field of pharmacy.

Therapy dog in training

Therapy and Comfort Dogs Visit the Academy

Therapy, service and comfort animals are used in a variety of health care and mental health capacities throughout the world.  Students in the Falls Church Academy health and medical science courses had the opportunity to meet some of these dogs who are active and in training along with their handlers/trainers through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs organization.  More than 500,000 of these highly trained animals are in service within the United States each year.  Students learned how this organization provides testing, certification, registration, support, and insurance for members who volunteer with dogs to visit hospitals, special needs centers, schools, nursing homes, and other facilities.

Dental students at NIH Dental Labs

Dental Students Visit NIH

Dental Careers Level 2 students had the opportunity to spend the day at NIDCR, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at NIH on March 8 where they toured the dental clinics and operating rooms for dental surgeries.  In addition, they visited the current dental research laboratories and learned the latest advances in oral health research.  At the end of the tour the NIDCR Director and Deputy Director spoke to the students about research and internship opportunities provided at NIH.
