Community Gazette- 3.12.23

Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! I hope this reaches each of you well. This weekend has been peaceful with the family and catching up on some reading and exercise that is very much needed! Reminder: Water Bottles–Students are encouraged to use a refillable water bottle at school.  There are water-filling stations in our addition and in the cafeteria.  We ask that all water bottles have sealed lids.  Athletic water bottles with spray tops (water bottles that can be squeezed) should not be brought to school.

Attention students and families, after school flag football will begin at Glasgow Middle School when we return from spring break and go through the end of the school year!  6th and 7th grade flag football will be held every Thursday afternoon during activity time.  8th grade football will be held every Wednesday during BOTH academic and activity time.  8th graders will be joined by the Justice High School coaching staff to begin shaping up for the upcoming summer and fall.  Any 8th grader that is interested in playing freshman football should attend.  Please reach out to Coach Brennan Haggett with any questions bkhaggett@fcps.edu.

On March 9, 2023, the curriculum overviews and unit standards from the planning and pacing guides will be posted on the FCPS public web and shared with the School Board. Over 86 web pages are being developed to reflect the scope and sequence of core content areas across K-12. The goal is to provide families a comprehensive overview of what students are learning and when they are learning it.

Information will be updated at the start of each school year to reflect curriculum updates. Grade level and content links to the family-facing pages will be included in the Schoology Curriculum Groups for teacher’s easy access beginning March 9, 2023, through March 17, 2023. To access the grade level and/or course web pages directly, first search for the level within the Academics page, select grade level or content, and click on Year at a Glance.

Every year, March is designated Women's History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women's contributions in American history. Kiss and Ride

We have many families who choose to drop off and pick up students at school.  We ask that you please use the kiss and ride lane and do not double park in our parking lot or the kiss and ride lane to drop off or pick up students.  In order to keep the flow of traffic moving along and to maintain safety, we ask that you pull your cars up and stop at the locations our monitors direct to before allowing your child to exit your vehicle.  We often have a long line of traffic waiting behind you and we want everyone to get through the line quickly and safely.  Please be sure students have all of their belongings ready to exit car doors onto the sidewalk.   If you need to enter the building, please find a spot to park in our lot.  Most importantly, please maintain a safe speed - we have students and staff members who are crossing the street to enter our building. We want to be sure that everyone does their part to keep Glasgow  safe.  Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Opioid Awareness Meeting: The Dangers of Fentanyl in Our Community

Substance abuse and related behavioral health problems can have a major impact on students, families, and communities. These impacts have become even more serious because of the increasing prevalence of fentanyl in drugs and other substances. Fentanyl is an incredibly powerful and dangerous opioid. Small amounts of fentanyl can easily lead to life-threatening overdoses. In 2021, fentanyls were identified in 77.14% of adolescent overdose deaths.

As educators, there is nothing more important to us than the safety and wellbeing of our students, families, and communities.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid invites you to join her for a community meeting on opioid awareness, Monday, March 13, 6:30-8 p.m., at Fairfax High School. During this event, you will hear from individuals and family members affected by the opioid epidemic, medical experts, and law enforcement representatives.

Learn more and register for the March 13 event.

Medicaid Policy Changes

A change in federal Medicaid policy could impact the health care coverage of millions of students. In order to avoid gaps in coverage, families need to know:

  • Families, especially those who have moved residences during the pandemic, should contact their state Medicaid offices to ensure their contact information is up to date.
  • Families should watch their mail for letters about Medicaid and the state Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, status.
  • Recipients must submit any renewal forms they receive to maintain coverage, which states could mail at any point between March 2023 and February 2024.
  • Families who no longer qualify for Medicaid after the review may qualify for coverage through their state’s health insurance exchange.
