Franklin Families and Students,

Good Afternoon!

Next week, we are looking forward to hosting a full-day visit from the award-winning author, Jennifer A. Nielsen. This opportunity for our students is made possible by the generous support of the Franklin MS PTA. All students will have the opportunity to hear Ms. Nielsen speak about her journey to become an author and her process for creating the stories our students enjoy reading. Ms. Nielsen will also be available for book signings and you can learn more about her books here. We encourage you to visit Ms. Nielsen’s webpage for more information.

I also wanted to put a spotlight on a member of the FMS staff, our Social Worker, Elyuse Brunais. National School Social Work Week took place this week and we are fortunate to have an amazing educator like Ms. Brunais as a member of our school community. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential and you can learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS. Thank you, Ms. Brunais!

Finally, as we move into the final months of the school year, we are asking for your partnership to ensure that all of our students arrive on time to school and attend consistently. Did you know that school attendance rates are a part of school accreditation measures for the state of Virginia? While we acknowledge and understand that the middle school start time is early, on-time arrival is essential for school success! Please reach out to your child’s counselor for additional support with getting your student to school on time and attending each day. Thank you for your continued partnership.

I can be reached at dpwright@fcps.edu and you are always encouraged to reach out with questions, concerns, feedback, or if there is anything we can do to support your student and your family.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

School Year 23-24 Student Course Selection Update

All students had a chance to meet with their school counselor individually to select their courses for next year. Students and parents can view their course selections in their SIS account under the Course Request.

Please note the following items:

  • This list is NOT a schedule, but a confirmation of the courses entered into the Student Information System. For all music classes, the current class is a placeholder until auditions/placements occur in the spring.
  • Visit our FMS Academic Advising website or contact your child's counselor with any questions.

Rising 9th Grade Activities Fair Field Trip

We are pleased to share that students will have an opportunity to participate in Oakton and Chantilly High School’s Activities Fair on Friday, March 24, 2023. This is an opportunity for students to learn about clubs, sports and tips to succeed at Oakton and Chantilly High School. Students will also have the opportunity to meet Oakton and Chantilly staff members, including administrators, counselors and club sponsors.

Students will depart from Franklin Middle School at 9:30 AM and return to Franklin at 12:00 PM. All students attending the field trip will eat C lunch that day.

Permission slips have been distributed the past couple of days during all lunches and will continue to be available in the main office and on Schoology for students. Permission slips are due back to the main office by Friday, March 17.

Please reach out to our After School Specialist, Courtney Mollé, with any questions.

Franklin MS After School Program

Please click here for the March 13 – March 17 activities schedule. There will be a Model UN meeting on Tuesday, March 14 during 2nd block. Also, our annual roller-skating event is on Wednesday, March 15. All students should have turned in a signed parent permission slip in order to skate.

We hope your child has found an interest in one or more of our after school activities. As a reminder, many of our clubs are “open enrollment” meaning students are welcome to start attending whenever they are ready. For questions regarding the After School Program, please email Mrs. Mollé.

Yearbook Information

We have a new yearbook class at our school and they have been working hard on our yearbook! Ordering information can be found here. The deadline to order yearbooks is April 24. Please contact Kelly Barlow with any questions.

Lost and Found

We have accumulated many misplaced items. Please encourage your student to check for their lost items in the lost and found area in the cafeteria. At the end of the school day on Friday, March 31, any remaining items will be donated to a local charitable organization.

Franklin MS Office Closed During Spring Break

Our school office will be closed during the week of April 3-7. We will resume normal office hours on April 10.
