A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Fairfax County Stormwater Management is providing a great opportunity for our school! Staff from the Fairfax County Watershed Education & Outreach Department will be helping us to plan and plant a garden with native plants which will help with erosion and protect our watershed! All of this will be FREE for our school - - and in the end we will have a beautiful pollinator garden! In order to prepare for this project, we need to begin working on killing the grass in the area where the garden will grow. Families can help us by sending in your old newspapers. We’ll be collecting them over the next few days in the main office and then we’ll begin laying them down outside. We can’t wait for our new garden!

PTA Spring Enrichment

The Bush Hill Elementary PTA is excited to provide students with a variety of enrichment opportunities this Spring. From coding to art, there is something for every student to enjoy. Course details for all classes can be viewed here: https://bit.ly/bhesenrichment2023.

Please note some courses are taught by Bush Hill teachers and parents, and some courses are taught by third party vendors. Please sign up by tomorrow, March 15th. All programs have an enrollment cap; if any specific course goes beyond the maximum capacity, participation will be decided by a lottery drawing. Those selected to participate will receive an email inviting them to register or to offer their spot to someone on the waitlist.

For courses being offered by third party vendors, families can register directly through those vendors here:

Electrical Engineering: Sr. Electrical Inventions - begins 3/22/23

Lego Structures: Jr. Structural Engineering - begins 3/23/23

Little Doctor School - begins 4/11/23, register by 4/4

Little Veterinarian School - begins 4/12/23, register by 4/4

Scholarships are available for families needing financial assistance. Please contact Ms. Duffy before the registration deadline.

In order to make these programs a success, we are looking for a few volunteers to help with logistics such as check-in, snack distribution, and dismissal. We are also looking for 2 or more volunteers to help support LEGO League. We have nearly 40 interseted students but only 16 spots. If you are interested in supporting Bush Hill's enrichment programs this spring, please sign up to volunteer using this link https://bit.ly/BHEnrichmentVolunteers23.  Your support is greatly appreciated!

For any questions related to courses, please contact the PTA at PTABushHillElementary@gmail.com.

Ramadan

This year, the first day of Ramadan is Wednesday, March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

Bush Hill ES Muslim students and staff are given the opportunity to practice their faith in a safe and welcoming environment. Teachers and staff are aware that supporting students during this month helps build feeling of belonging, and therefore, school has already made plans for awareness and accommodations for practicing students; providing quiet areas to perform prayers, food-free spaces, flexible testing options and avoiding physical activities, if needed. Please let your child’s homeroom teacher know if they will be fasting or need other accommodations to support them during Ramadan.

Bush Hill ES honors cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion, and would like to hear from our school community how we can better support Muslim students during the month of Ramadan.

Feel free to send your thoughts and suggestions to Mrs. Intidame at: sintidame@fcps.edu

FCPS News on Ramadan

Ramadan begins with a half “O Day” on March 22, followed by an “O Day” on March 23. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

A Pro Bono Legal Clinic is available on Tuesday, March 21 to assist families with civil matters, consumer issues, housing, immigration, public benefits, and family issues. Registration is required!
