A Note from Mrs. Burke
Dear Rocky Run Families and Students,
Thank you to our 8th grade families that attended our Spring Family Night on Thursday. It was great to see our 8th graders getting excited about high school. In a few short months we will be celebrating their time here at Rocky Run with our 8th grade celebrations.
Last week at the Scholastic Art Regional Awards Ceremony, Evangeline Xie (Silver Key Winner) and Arshiya Sharma (Honorable Mention) were honored for their artwork as well as Makayla Donnelly (Honorable Mention) for her flash fiction story, “A Glass Wound.” March also happens to be Youth Art Month which encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including: Problem solving, Creativity, Observation, and Communication. Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.
This week we celebrated National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS. We want to thank our social worker, Mrs. Wescott, for all of her hard work supporting our students and families here at Rocky Run.
It is that time of year where we spring ahead, so on Sunday night before you go to bed remember to set your clocks ahead one hour!. As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective items on their backpacks or clothes and encourage your child to be especially alert for cars.
I am looking forward to our PTA meeting (6pm) and Family Bookclub (7pm) on Wednesday March 15th and Shrek Jr. The Musical Friday March 17th at 7pm; Saturday March 18 at 2pm and 7pm; Sunday March 19 at 2pm.
Have a fantastic weekend!
Amanda Burke
Interim Principal

Eighth Grade Family Night Feedback
Thank you to all of the 8th grade families, staff, and community members that joined us for our first 8th Grade Spring Family Night! It was wonderful to connect with so many of you and see students meeting some high school staff and students! If you were here last night, please consider filling out this Spring Family Night Feedback Survey. We are always looking for ways we can improve and best support families. If you'd like access any of the resources shared, please check the Eighth Grade Family Night Resources shared on our website.
Student Course Selections for SY23-24
All students had a chance to meet with his/her school counselor individually to select their courses for next year. Students and parents can view their course selections in their SIS account under the Course Request.
Please note the following items:
-
This list is NOT a schedule, but a confirmation of the courses entered into the Student Information System.
-
Music Courses - Students who have signed up for the music courses (Band, Orchestra and Chorus) will initially be placed in the beginner level until auditions and placements have been completed. Please know that music directors will work with counselors to make the appropriate updates between March and April.
- Visit our Academic Advising website or contact your child's counselor with any questions.
Book Fair Next Week!
We are very excited to host our annual Scholastic book fair next week from March 13-17. There will be books for a variety of levels, ages, and interests! View our Scholastic homepage for lots of information.
Here are some things to know about our book fair:
- Students can visit the book fair before school, during rock time, and after school. Most English teachers will bring their classes to browse the selection sometime during the week, as well.
-
Special evening hours: 6-8pm on Wednesday (including the PTA meeting and Family Book Club). Everyone is welcome to visit during these hours!
Paying for Purchases:
- We accept cash, checks made out to Rocky Run, credit cards, and Scholastic eWallet. Learn more about eWallet here and create/add to your student’s account here. (Family and friends can contribute to a student’s eWallet, too. Just share the link!)
-
NEW THIS YEAR: TAX Everyone is required to pay tax on their purchases like a regular store. Virginia tax is 6%. We will have signs for students to estimate how much money to bring.
Get Involved:
- Teacher wish lists will be available to help classroom libraries, too!
- We are looking for parent volunteers (not student volunteers) to help make this event a success! Sign up to help here. Thank you for any time you can give!
- If you cannot make it to the Book Fair, contribute any amount to our library’s eWallet! These funds will be used to add new books to our library.
