PTA Equity Group

The PTA Equity Group is seeking interested individuals to contribute ideas that will engage students in activities focusing on the concept of equity. These activities would complement those lessons carried out by teachers at SLES. If you are interested in becoming part of this initiative, want to share some ideas, or just want to learn more about our Group, please reach out to Chau Lai at equity@slpta.org. We would love to hear from you!

Families as Partners Workshop: A Simple View of Reading - Wed. 3/29 @ 6pm

Parents/Guardians of K-3rd Grade Students: Join a team of teachers on March 29th, from 6-7 pm in room C199, to learn about the Simple View of Reading (SVR) model that guides reading instruction at Stratford Landing Elementary.

We will:

* Discuss Fairfax County School District’s shifts in reading instruction as we define the essential components of reading

* Consider how an effective approach to reading instruction addresses oral language comprehension as thoroughly as it addresses foundational skills of word recognition

* Recognize relationships between vocabulary knowledge, background knowledge, oral language proficiency, and reading comprehension

* Explore the importance of intentional use of rich vocabulary across all levels of instruction

* Learn how “conversational turns” in adult-child interactions foster development in key areas of the brain responsible for language comprehension

Childcare and dinner will be provided! To register for this event, please complete this short form by March 22nd: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScYxn0JwWmAy_lOD8tjNSeoTB3C2IsGtbraIGc7-HnvGjDAWQ/viewform
