Message from Ms. Kearns
Dear Lake Braddock Families,
First week in March is done and Bruin Nation is still bustling as usual!
Both DECA and FBLA did amazingly at their competitions last weekend. Congratulations to all those students and amazing advisers who help guide our Bruins. And speaking of advisers, we were so proud to learn that our very own FCCLA Adviser Ms.Toshieba Ragland won the FCCLS 2022-23 Adviser Mentor Award! Ms. Ragland dedicates so much of her time and energy to her students, so it is so nice to see that she has been recognized!
The Lake Braddock It's Academic Team made it to the playoffs for the second year in a row! You can check out their performance Saturday at 10am on WETA. The team will compete this Sunday against Whitman HS and Osbourn Park HS, competing for the first time in person in a physical studio as opposed to zoom since 2020.
We would also like to remind you about the upcoming Community Meeting on Opioid Awareness to be held Monday, March 13 at Fairfax High School. You are invited to join Dr. Reid and the Fairfax County Police Department for this important conversation. Attendees have an opportunity to ask questions about how we are all working together to address these opioid issues in our community. For more information, please see the FCPS section below or check out the FCPS website.
One last reminder, this weekend please remember to Spring forward! This time change means that it will be darker in the morning when many of our students are walking to bus stops or school. Please remind your students to be extra mindful of cars.
Have a wonderful and relaxing weekend!
Go Bruins!
Lindsey Kearns
Check out the Bruin Nation It's Academic team led by Mr. Holtzman Saturday morning at 10am on WETA!

Calendar Update: Graduation Day Early Release
Lake Braddock's graduation is at 7:30 pm on Monday, June 5. FCPS recently released guidance that June 5 will now be an early release day for all Lake Braddock 7th-11th graders. Students will be released at 10:30 am. The bell schedule will be shared in the near future.
|
Calendar Reminders: Daylight Savings Time
Sunday, March 12, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour!
As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Purple Up! April 19 for Month of the Military Child
April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. To show our support, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 19 for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.
The FCPS Purple Up! t-shirt is available for order now through March 16 here! Purple Up! FCPS!

AP Exam Update
The final deadline to order AP exams is coming up! Please check your MyAP and make sure you are enrolled in all the class sections for each AP exam you plan on taking in May. If you are not enrolled in the class section, you are not in the count for that AP exam order, and an exam will not be ordered for you.
If you need to enroll in a class section to ensure an AP exam is ordered for you, you’ll need to obtain the join code from your AP teacher. Once you enroll in the class section, you will be part of that AP exam count. However, you will need to pay a $40 late order fee, which is a fee charged by College Board, because you missed the initial November 15th AP order deadline. The deadline to enroll in the class section for each AP exam you plan on taking is Monday, March 13th.
Once I see you have enrolled in MyAP, I will send you the link to make the $40 payment on MySchoolBucks. Please pay this fee at your earliest convenience, so that you do not have any financial obligations at the end of the school year. This is particularly important for seniors who will not be able to receive their cap and gown for graduation until all financial obligations are paid.
Please contact the AP Testing Team below with questions and/or concerns.

SRTS-Bike Light Giveaway
The Safe Routes to School Committee invites your family to try actively commuting to school during February and March! We are giving away 30 sets of rechargeable bike lights to LBSS families who try walking or rolling to school and then complete this survey by March 31.
SRTS Bike Light Giveaway Form
We suggest you do this activity with your student, and discuss pedestrian and biking safety as you choose a route and travel to school. You can try the alternate method of commuting to LBSS at any time, such as on a weekend or on a school day. We hope the result will be more students who enjoy the mental health, academic and social benefits of active commuting to school.
If you live more than a few miles from the school, you can participate by driving part of the way to school, such as to a library or park near Lake Braddock, and then walking or biking the rest of the way.
|
SRTS Bike Safety Tips
Spring weather is here, and more students will take the opportunity to walk, bike or roll to school. This is great as it is fun, and reduces traffic and air pollution near Lake Braddock. If your student tries biking to school (even part of the way), here are some safety reminders:
Plan your route and try it out:
- Help your student pick the safest route to school, and practice riding the route together.
- Choose streets with minimal traffic and lower speeds, and look for routes where you can ride separate from traffic using a path or bicycle lane.
- Limit the number of street crossings, and avoid crossing busy or high-speed streets.
PTSA Mulch Sale
This is the last chance to order mulch and support our senior class.
The LBSS PTSA is hosting All Night Grad Party for the Lake Braddock Class of 2023. Please help by ordering mulch and/or making a tax deductible donation. The mulch will be $5 per bag. We are once again offering the JK's double shredded hardwood 3 cubic foot bags of mulch.
For your convenience, link to order HERE.
With an order of 15 bags or more, we offer free delivery on Saturday, March 25th and Sunday, March 26th. Otherwise, you can pick up your mulch at Lake Braddock Secondary School March 25th/26th.

FCPS Community Meeting on Opioid Awareness
Substance abuse and related behavioral health problems can have a major impact on students, families, and communities. These impacts have become even more serious because of the increasing prevalence of fentanyl in drugs and other substances. Fentanyl is an incredibly powerful and dangerous opioid. Small amounts of fentanyl can easily lead to life-threatening overdoses. In 2021, fentanyl was identified in 77.14% of U.S. adolescent overdose deaths. There is nothing more important to us than the safety and wellbeing of our students, families, and communities. Fairfax Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid invites you to join her for a community meeting on opioid awareness, Monday, March 13, 6:30-8 p.m., at Fairfax High School.
Dr. Reid will be joined by Chief Kevin Davis of the Fairfax County Police Department, in welcoming the community to engage in this important conversation. Major Thea Pirnat of the Fairfax County Organized Crime and Intelligence Bureau will share information about drug trends in Fairfax County.
The Overdose Prevention Initiative: Outreach on Invisible Dangers, led by the United States Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Virginia in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will present testimonials from individuals affected by the opioid epidemic, medical experts, and law enforcement representatives.
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions about how Fairfax County agencies are working together to address these opioid issues in our community.Watch the video and learn more on our website. Register for the March 13 event.
