Message from Dr. Khoshaba
Good afternoon, SoCo Family!
I learned about a job fair opportunity for students earlier this week. Here’s the information in case your student is interested:
Looking for a job or volunteer opportunity? All students are invited to attend the 2023 Fairfax County Teen Job Fair Series kicking off Saturday, March 11th from 11am to 1pm at West Springfield High School. The other fairs will be held on Saturday, March 18th at South County High School from 11am to 1pm and on Saturday March 25th from 1-3pm at Chantilly High School. At each fair,
students will have the opportunity to engage with employers offering part-time, full-time, seasonal, and volunteer positions. During the fairs, students will also be able to attend career-building workshops like Resume Building and Interviewing 101. Most positions at the fair are geared toward students age 16+, but some opportunities for younger students may be available with parental consent. Registration for students is free and available online or at the fairs. For more information, or to register, please visit the Teen Job Fair webpage.
Our next Student Advisory Council meeting is this Wednesday, March 15 in room F-107. Please encourage your student to attend during fourth bell (Advisory) if they have ideas for improving our school culture.
Along similar lines, our next Parent Advisory Council meeting is April 25 at 6PM in the library. Please mark your calendars if you are interested in attending.
We are continuing our analysis of ways to continually improve our traffic patterns on campus. I believe we’re close to a final decision, so please be on the look-out for final updates either next week or the week of March 27.
In a continued effort to show the spotlight on our Stallion students and staff, various “READ” posters have adorned our hallways. Thank you to our Librarians, Mrs. Romney and Mrs. Strong, for their efforts to continue enhancing our school culture!
On Friday, March 10 we celebrated, Dude Be Nice day, which is a movement to push back against bullying. A special shout out to our SGA for decorating our entire school in orange and with positive messages like the ones below.
Please remember that this weekend is “Spring Forward” Daylight Savings, so we jump ahead an hour on Sunday morning (at 2AM).

From the Testing Office
Attention Parents and Families of 11th Grade Students:
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires school divisions to give a special Integrated Reading/Writing (IRW) Field Test in spring 2023. Divisions must offer this field test to all students who are scheduled to take an online Standards of Learning (SOL) Reading test for grade 5, grade 8, or end-of-course (EOC) this spring. This would include all juniors taking English 11, English 1 HN, or AP English Language.
The field test at our school is scheduled for March 21 and 22. IRW Field Test outcomes are solely for use by the VDOE and will not be reported to divisions, schools, families, or students.
All 11th grade parents received an email about the IRW Field Test on Thursday, March 2. If you do not want your student to participate in the IRW field test, please submit this Google form https://forms.gle/54tc578vAxwBipjw5 by March 15 (deadline extended).
If you have any questions about the IRW field test, please contact our school test coordinator Chris Bird (cwbird@fcps.edu).

These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, management (human resources and organizational), communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism.
The questionnaire will be collected online between March 13 and March 24. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

Equity in Education Month
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)—in conjunction with the Virginia School Boards Association—observes March as Equity in Education Month, a division-wide opportunity to deepen our commitment to creating a climate and curriculum where all students receive the resources they need to reach their fullest potential.
Disability Awareness Month
In March people throughout the United States will celebrate Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month. Both histories are foundational parts of American history. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of this history year-round, and the celebration of Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness month are opportunities to honor these diverse and important stories.
Resources for Women's History Month and Disability Awareness Month are available for teachers across content areas as part of the FCPS Multiple Perspectives Hub. Teachers and school leaders will find ideas for classroom learning experiences across content areas and grade levels. Resources curated specifically for the social studies curriculum are also available on the new Women's History 180 document and Disability Awareness 180 document.
National Nutrition Month
National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits.
Celebrating Arts in Our Schools
The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including:
Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.
March has also been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.
