The Lion’s Roar

March 3, 2023

Read Across America graphic

Read Across America Day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. Here at Lane, our Lions are always excited about reading!

Mr. Benzelock’s 2nd grade and Mrs. Greene’s kindergarten were just two of the classes who marked this special day by reading and celebrating books!

Celebration of Cultures Night Next Thursday, Spirit Days All Week Long!

The strength of our diverse school community will be in the spotlight next week as we celebrate the many cultures among us all week long. Each day, Monday through Friday, will have a different culture-centered spirit theme, and Thursday night the community will come together for Celebration of Cultures Night.

Are you ready to travel the world without leaving Lane?

If so, pack your sense of fun and adventure, and join us for Celebration of Cultures Night on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Over two dozen families have signed up to share their culture that night through food, music, art, and more! You’ll be able to browse cultural displays, sample international foods, enjoy performances, and earn a small prize by getting your “passport” stamped. It’s all free and fun for Lane Lions of all ages. All families are welcome! (Please remember that this is not a drop-off event and that all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.)

If you’d like to share your culture, it’s not too late to sign-up! A second paper participation form was sent home in this week’s Wednesday Folder, which you can fill out and send to school by next Tuesday (March 7th), or you can sign up online.

We need volunteers for the event as well. If you’d like to help, please sign up here. Each shift is only 30 minutes, so you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the event!

Spirit days help set the stage

The lead up to Celebration of Cultures Night includes the following culture-centered spirit days:

  • Monday, March 6th – “Where in the World Have We Been?” Day
Wear a shirt from a place that represents your culture
  • Tuesday, March 7th – “Colors of the World” Day
Wear a shirt with a flag or a color you associate with your culture
  • Wednesday, March 8th – “I Am My Own Culture” Day
Wear something that celebrates YOU and the unique person you are
  • Thursday, March 9th – “Show Off Your Culture” Day
Wear something that represents your heritage or culture
as we get ready for Celebration of Cultures Night
  • Friday, March 10th – “Celebrate Lane!”
Wear Lane colors or spirit wear

We hope your child will participate in our spirit days, and we hope to see your family on Thursday night!

Unclaimed Lost & Found Items Will Be Donated Next Friday

Lost and found items on display

Our Lost & Found is overflowing to the point that we no longer have space to hold the items. The entire inventory has been pulled from the cafeteria and placed in the bus lobby. Please ask your children to take a look as they enter and leave the building if they are missing anything. We want to get the lost items back to their owners!

We will keep the items on display until next Friday, March 10th. Anything left after that date will be donated.

Thank you for your help with our spring cleaning!

Ramadan Parent Meeting – Monday, March 6th, 6:30 p.m.

Does your family observe Ramadan? Would you like to learn more about supports for students during the school day throughout that time period? If so, please join Lane administrators and a Cultural Liaison from the FCPS Family and School Partnerships Office for a parent information session next Monday, March 6th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Lane Library. Bring your questions, and we will provide the answers!

Family Engagement Series: Social-Emotional Supports for Students – Friday, March 10th, 8:15 a.m.

Next Friday morning at 8:15 a.m., parents are invited to join our counselors, social worker, and school psychologist to learn more about their roles and the social-emotional supports available to students during the school day. Child care will be provided for school-age children. If you plan to attend, please RSVP here. This will help us plan for refreshments and child care.

Yearbook “Early Bird” Pricing Ends Next Friday!

School yearbooks are on sale. The basic book is just $16 now, plus options such as imprinted name on the cover, extra autograph pages, and stickers you can choose to add. The base price will go up to $20 after March 10th. Order now and save!

Ordering is simple: Just go to http://ybpay.lifetouch.com, put in yearbook ID code 10217423, and pay with your credit card.

Martial Arts Lessons in P. E. Next Week

If you are at Lane on Tuesday or Wednesday next week, don’t be surprised if you hear some loud unusual sounds coming from the gym.

Elite Martial Arts Centers (EMA), a local martial arts studio that has been partnering with our school since 2016, will be paying its annual visit to Lane those two days to introduce the Korean style of martial art known as Taekwondo to students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Students will learn basic skills while developing an appreciation for discipline, self-control, and goal setting. Those sounds you hear will be students practicing their new skills and having a great time doing so!

Many Lane students and families are members at EMA through either Taekwondo classes or the after-school program, and we appreciate the strong partnership we have established with this local business.

Language Translation on FCPS Websites

Lane website masthead with new translation option

In a continued effort to prioritize access for our diverse communities, FCPS is launching a language-translation feature that will be available on every division and school webpage. The feature has been added to the header at the top of the page and will scroll with the user as they navigate the page. Learn more about our new translation feature.

Notification of Testing: Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test for 1st Graders on Monday, March 13th

Dear 1st Grade Parents and Guardians:

In an effort to obtain additional information about your child, the online version of the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test Third Edition (NNAT3) will be administered to your child on March 13, 2023. It is important that your child attend school on this day. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.

The NNAT3 is a nonverbal measure of general intellectual ability. The test evaluates a student’s reasoning and problem-solving skills through the identification of patterns involving geometric shapes and pictorial designs. The test is designed to assess ability without requiring the student to read, write, or speak. Students are not expected to know the answers to all questions and will be given opportunities to practice sample items before taking the test. The NNAT3 is an abilities test, so children are not expected to study or prepare for the test the way they would for an achievement test.

Score reports will be provided to parents once scores become available. Typically, these reports are available several months after the test is taken.

If you have any questions about this test, please contact Lane’s Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART) Linda Simon, Assistant Principal and School Test Coordinator Allen Dickens, or Lane Counselor Teresa Perry.

FCPS News & Announcements

Strategic Plan: How Are We Doing? Your Feedback Needed!

Next week, FCPS will be seeking your feedback on the school division’s progress with developing our new Strategic Plan. Since last fall, thousands of students, staff, families, and community members have contributed to the strategic planning process by participating in focus groups, planning teams, community forums, and surveys. Parents/caregivers and community members will be invited to provide feedback on the work that’s been done thus far by completing a survey. Your input will help us know whether we are headed in the right direction—one that will help ensure a thriving future for every FCPS student.

Please keep an eye out for the survey link starting early next week. Visit the FCPS Strategic Planning webpage for more details.
