Kid's Heart Challenge - New Name, Same Fun!

It’s time for your child to show heart! For the 22nd year, CRS has again partnered with the American Heart Association to educate students about the cardiovascular system while providing information on keeping this essential body system healthy throughout life.  The American Heart Association launched the Kids Heart Challenge, formally known as Jump Rope for Heart.  Kids Heart Challenge is the same as Jump Rope for Heart, only now it aligns more with our Health and Physical Education curriculum.

This year we have set a goal of $10,000.  This follows the most successful year in school history!  Last year our students raised a record amount of $30,957!!! Churchill Road was #1 in Fairfax County and #3 in the state!  It is just another example of how our families value living a health and active lifestyle along with the generosity to help a good cause.

Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser forms were handed out to the entire student body in this week’s VIP folder.  Students who choose to participate in the fundraiser will have the opportunity to earn Thank You gifts from the American Heart Association while helping millions across the United States through the American Heart Association.  We are again going 100% online donations this year.  Easy to follow steps have been sent home in VIP folders.  The fundraiser will officially begin on Monday, March 6 and end on Friday March 31, 2023.

Portrait of a Graduate

March POG

This month’s theme is aligned with the Portrait of a Graduate attributes of being a Collaborator and a Global and Ethical Citizen. This involves skills such as recognizing similarities and differences among cultures, caring for our planet, acting responsibly and being a strong member of a community. Being a collaborator involves skills such as working respectfully with others by honoring different viewpoints, ideas and perspectives to achieve common goals.

Improving Your Family's Emotional Health

7 PM March 15, 2023 at The Alden Theatre

Tickets on Sale now!

Lynn Lyons, licensed independent clinical social worker and best-selling author of Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents and the newly-released The Anxiety Audit, presents Helping Your Family’s Emotional Health: Practical, Strategic Skills and Solutions for Managing Anxiety, Enhancing Flexibility, and Creating Wellbeing.

Based on current research and over 30 years of clinical experience, Lynn Lyons presents a strategic approach based on skill-building, with prevention as the preferred route. Using creativity, connection and awareness of their own patterns, parents will learn how to increase their child’s flexibility, support the tolerance of uncertainty, and emotionally and preventatively equip themselves and those they love as we all move forward.

This program is offered by The Safe Community Coalition, in partnership with the McLean Community Center, and is appropriate for ages 13+. It will be held Wednesday, March 15th, from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Alden Theatre, 1234 Ingleside Avenue, McLean, VA.

Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. Space is limited. Purchase tickets now at http://mcleanscc.org/

Tips for Healthy Minds

  • Filling Your Child’s Emotional Bank Account - Read the latest Healthy Minds blog to understand why relationships are like savings accounts, and how you can help build trust and security with your children.
  • Talking with your child about emotional topics, such as their mental health, can feel uncomfortable. This can be due to the stigma involved, lack of information or even fears of possible blame. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers helpful tips on reducing the stigma and how to have a healthy dialog on mental health.
