Family Math & Literacy Night

Family & Student Engagement Celebrations

Forestdale Families,

What an amazing week it was for family and student engagement!

All week, we celebrated Read Across America Week.  Our theme this year was "Reading is for Everyone!"  Our week included fun activities for classes, virtual author visits for grades K-6, special guest readers, and an incredible Family Math & Literacy Night on Wednesday!

Family Math & Literacy Night

Thank you to all the students, families, and staff who came out this past Wednesday for our amazing Family Math & Literacy Night!  We had a blast learning math games that can be played at home, engaging in literacy activities together, and all students went home with wonderful free books in English and/or Spanish.  It was such a great evening of being present together as a Forestdale Family!

Guest Readers: Thank You to our Community Partners!

We loved celebrating guest readers in our classrooms this week.  We welcomed family members who came to read to their students' classes, loved having Lewis Lancer football players visit classrooms to read, and welcomed members of the Alpha Beta Alpha Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. who not only read to our students, but also generously donated many, many books to our school and classroom libraries in honor of Black History Month.

Read-A-Thon Success

Thank you to our awesome PTA who planned a wonderful Read-a-Thon fundraiser in conjunction with Read Across America!  It was a wonderful week with a focus on reading and the benefit of funds raised for our students.  Congratulation to all our readers, and thank you to all our family and community members who donated!  Stay tuned for more information from the PTA on the results of this successful week!

We are so thankful to all our families, PTA, and community partners for making this week a wonderful celebration of literacy for our Falcons!

Fondly,

Mrs. Jenny Cunneen, Proud Principal

Dr. LaDonna Tate, Proud Assistant Principal

We Loved our Guest Readers!

FCPS Early Childhood and PreK Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools offers programs for the youngest learners through several programs.

  • PreK is for students 3-4 years old whose parents meet income requirements. Space is limited, and priority is given to 4 year olds to help them prepare for kindergarten.
  • Early Head Start is for infants, toddlers, and expectant mothers who meet income requirements.
  • Early Literacy Programs and Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) work with parents to help prepare their children for school.

Community liaisons are available to assist families with the registration process and answer any questions. For more information, visit the Early Childhood Registration webpage

Language Translation on FCPS Websites

In a continued effort to prioritize access for our diverse communities, FCPS is launching a language translation feature that will be available on every division and school webpage. The feature has been added to the header at the top of the page and will scroll with the user as they navigate the page. Learn more about our new translation feature.

School Social Worker Week

Thank You to our School Social Worker

March 5-10 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.  This week we celebrate Forestdale's school social worker, Ms. Amity Kim!

Women's History Month

Disability Awareness Month

Forestdale Celebrates Women's History Month & Disability Awareness Month

In March people throughout the United States will celebrate Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness Month. Both histories are foundational parts of American history. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of this history year-round, and the celebration of Women’s History Month and Disability Awareness month are opportunities to honor these diverse and important stories.

Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.

We salute the incredible students with disabilities and the amazing women of the Forestdale Family who serve our Falcons at school, at home, and in the community!

FCPS Strategic Plan

How Are We Doing? Your Feedback Needed!

Next week, FCPS will be seeking your feedback on the school division’s progress with developing our new Strategic Plan. Since last fall, thousands of students, staff, families, and community members have contributed to the strategic planning process by participating in focus groups, planning teams, community forums, and surveys. Parents/caregivers and community members will be invited to provide feedback on the work that’s been done thus far by completing a survey. Your input will help us know whether we are headed in the right direction—one that will help ensure a thriving future for every FCPS student.

Please keep an eye out for the survey link starting early next week. Visit our Strategic Planning webpage for more details.

Forestdale Celebrates Equity in Education Month

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)—in conjunction with the Virginia School Boards Association—observes March as Equity in Education Month, a division-wide opportunity to deepen our commitment to creating a climate and curriculum where all students receive the resources they need to reach their fullest potential.
