TLES' Family Heritage Club

presenter shares information with an audience

Timber Lane ES is gearing up for its second Family Heritage Club gathering on March 7th. Two of our families will share their Bolivian heritage in a presentation and the food of their culture.

Family Heritage Night is the brainchild of a  Margarita Baptiste, family liaison, Ben Chiet, TLES principal, collaboration.  As they were meeting to discuss increasing family engagement and getting folks in here more often, Ms. Baptiste  discussed obtaining family information around their holidays/celebrations and suggested a Family Heritage Night. Mr. Chiet built on this idea and wondered what if we make this a recurring event and really get to know our community and cultures. Baptiste and Chiet talked often about Street Data last year and this seemed like an awesome way to really get to know those we serve!

The group meets monthly and a different family shares their culture  At its inaugural event there was approx. 20 adults and 10-15 kids in attendance. All members of our TLES community are welcome. We would appreciate it if families rsvp'd to the invitation sent via Talking Points as this will enable us to plan accordingly. A report on our 2nd night will be shared in the weeks to come.

Talking With Your Child About Emotional Topics

Talking with your child about emotional topics, such as their mental health, can feel uncomfortable. This can be due to the stigma involved, lack of information or even fears of possible blame. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers helpful tips on reducing the stigma and how to have a healthy dialog on mental health.

Parental Notifications and Policy 3290: Sexually Explicit Content

A Virginia law passed in spring 2022 requires schools to create a policy for parental notification of sexually explicit content/materials. In December 2022, the School Board adopted FCPS Policy 3290: Parental Notification Regarding Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content

FCPS has had policies in place for many years regarding the review of instructional materials, communication with parents, and options for alternative instructional materials.

An expectation of this new policy is the 30-day parental notification requirement of sexually explicit content in instructional materials assigned or selected by teachers. After reviewing the notification letter, parents or caregivers who prefer to choose alternative instructional materials for their child must submit this form to the appropriate teacher within the 30-day notification window. View Policy 3290 for more information.

Save the Date: Timber Lane’s SOL Testing Calendar

Please see the table below for Timber Lane’s SOL testing dates.  It is important that your child attend school on the dates designated for them to test.  Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest the night prior.  More information will be sent home in Wednesday folders over the next 2 weeks, including a retest permission form.  A retest is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing).  If you believe that your student would benefit from the retake option, you can fill out this Google Form granting permission or sign and send back the paper copy that will be in Wednesday folders indicating you give permission.

More information on the Standards of Learning assessments can be found here.  Please reach out to Shele Banford (703) 206-5300 as questions arise.
