March 7, News from Sleepy Hollow

 March 7, 2023

Emily 1

My Dearest Sleepy Hollow Family,

I hope this newsletter finds you in the best of health and in great spirits. Did you know that this week (March 5 – 11, 2023) is National School Social Work Week? National School Social Work Week is celebrated every first full week of March to honor school social workers across the country and appreciate their work in helping students achieve academic success. “Social work began in U.S. schools over 110 years ago by visiting teachers. School social workers are professionals within the social work field that work with teachers, parents, and school administrators. Their purpose is to help students deal with mental health and behavioral challenges and provide academic and classroom support. School social workers also help in developing education policies, work with crisis interventions, and identify and report child neglect and abuse. School social workers mainly work in primary and secondary schools.” Please join me in celebrating and honoring our very own Sleepy Hollow Elementary School Social Worker, Emily Jackson.

Wishing each of you a week filled with Amazing Grace, love, and KINDNESS!

~Kindness is something anyone can give without losing anything themselves. ~ Unknown

~ Kindness is giving hope to those who think they are all alone in this world. ~ Unknown

All the best, Mattie Fallen, Principal

News from the Library

Have you heard the terms “windows” and “mirrors” for books?  A mirror book is one that reflects the reader’s own experiences, which can be reassuring and validating; a window book gives the reader a glimpse into experiences different from their own and builds empathy and understanding of others.  Both are valuable to the reader!  The stories in our library’s books reflect a wide variety of settings, characters, and events so that ALL readers can find both windows and mirrors.  Reading widely helps in so many ways – yay books!

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through twelfth.  Instruction is seen as a partnership between parents and guardians, the school, and the community to support learning essential for the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to exclude their child from all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are excluded receive age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to exclude your child from all or part of FLE for this school year, opt-out forms will be included in your child's back-to-school/orientation packages and are available online for.  Complete the opt-out form and return it to your child's school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed descriptions of the grade-level program are available online at Elementary (K-6).  FLE grade-level specific lessons and the media for which FCPS has streaming rights are available to parents online at Schoology.  Parents/guardians log in to Schoology with the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) parent account.  Grade-level specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax City Regional Library (this location has no means).  Grade-level specific lessons and media that are not streamed online are available for review in your child's school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Questions about the program can be addressed at your child's school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu
