Floris Families,

It is the last day of March and we enjoyed celebrating our Reading is Snow Much Fun challenge today.

Kudos go out to our counselors, Sarah de Kramer and James Duffield, for the extra hours of planning and hard work that went into having a great Career Week. Thank you to all of the speakers who came to share with our students. It is appreciated.

As a reminder, next week, April 3-7 is spring break. Schools and school offices will be closed. Students will return to school on Monday, April 10, 2023.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Holly Walker, Principal, hjwalker@fcps.edu

Rob Gibbs, Assistant Principal, ragibbs@fcps.edu

Passover

Passover

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery.

Passover begins on April 5 at sundown, and ends on April 13.

Theravada

Theravada New Year (April 6)

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, April is the month of celebration. It marks the end of the lunisolar calendar and the beginning of another, just like January 1 for most people in the world, and is why this holiday is termed the Theravada New Year. The Theravada New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

Easter

Good Friday (April 7) & Easter (April 9)

Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, is the day on which Christians annually observe the commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is a day of mourning. During special Good Friday services Christians meditate on Jesus's suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith.

lunch and learn

Lunch and Learn with the Floris Counseling Team

Monday April 17, 12:00-1:00pm

What to do when my child worries?

We all experience anxiety and worries as a part of life. How do we help our children when worries are getting in the way of being happy and successful at home and at school? We will explore strategies and supports together in our next lunch and learn session.

The format will be the same: Bring your lunch if you want, and we will enjoy more collaborative conversations on how we can all work together to support the social and emotional needs of our Floris students. We look forward to meeting with you!

Sincerely,

Sarah de Kramer, James Duffield, and Maggie Seneca

Please RSVP to Maggie Seneca, maseneca1@fcps.edu, if you plan to attend.

Spring 2023 Data Collection for FCPS ESSER/RTS

FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement (ORSI) will gather information about FCPS’ teaching and learning efforts this school year from school-based administrators, teachers, students, and families this spring. These data collection efforts are part of FCPS’ ongoing study of what is working and what needs improvement following the pandemic. This includes FCPS’ use of $188.8 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding to support the safe operation of schools and address the impacts of COVID-19 on students.

Surveys will be administered to students in grades 4 -12, all teachers, and all families from April 17 to May 1. The student survey has been translated into Spanish. There is an adapted survey available for students with disabilities.

Survey links for families will be shared via email to the enrolling parent. Student links will be shared in their fcpsschools.net email.

Thank you in advance for supporting data collection to inform FCPS about its teaching and learning efforts this year and help us best meet the needs of our students and staff.

PTA Fundraiser
PTA Volunteers needed

The PTA is looking for event volunteers for next year!

The PTA is excited to announce that we are adding some new volunteer positions for the 2023/2024 school year! We are currently looking for 1-2 people to fill the below, non-board member positions for next year.

We’ve created these opportunities in such a way that you will only need to devote a few hours of your time each month to prepare. Parent volunteers are absolutely essential to the PTA's success and ability to offer these types of community building events for our wonderful Floris community. We have been very fortunate this year with the amount of parents who have volunteered and are hoping to have even more next year as we have more exciting events in the works!
