6th grade Lock-In - Fri. 3/10 @ 6pm

Mark your calendars for 6:00pm – 11:00pm on Friday, March 10th at SLES. An info/permission form was sent home in Wednesday folders and can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LRtjsa4fb9io7Fqpc9-4fe4EXGS3g42B/edit. If your student plans to attend, please get that turned into your teacher ASAP! This event is run solely by volunteer efforts so we will need many volunteers in order to pull it off.  If there is one event this year that you will be committing to volunteer for, this is the one to choose.  Please visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090c4baba92ba1f49-sles#/ and come help give our students a memorable experience in their 6th grade year.  Parents will only be permitted to stay in the building during the lock-in if they are volunteering.

Families as Partners Workshop: A Simple View of Reading - Wed. 3/29 @ 6pm

Join a team of teachers on March 29th, from 6-7 pm in room C199 to learn about the Simple View of Reading (SVR) model that guides reading instruction at Stratford Landing Elementary. We will:

* Discuss Fairfax County School District’s shifts in reading instruction as we define the essential components of reading

* Consider how an effective approach to reading instruction addresses oral language comprehension as thoroughly as it addresses foundational skills of word recognition

* Recognize relationships between vocabulary knowledge, background knowledge, oral language proficiency, and reading comprehension

* Explore the importance of intentional use of rich vocabulary across all levels of instruction

* Learn how “conversational turns” in adult-child interactions foster development in key areas of the brain responsible for language comprehension

Childcare and dinner will be provided! To register for this event, please complete this short form by March 22nd: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScYxn0JwWmAy_lOD8tjNSeoTB3C2IsGtbraIGc7-HnvGjDAWQ/viewform
