Mental Health First Aid Training for Woodson HS
This course is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.

WOODSON CLUBS & ACTIVITIES
Deaf Academic Bowl Team
 Congratulations to Woodson Deaf Academic Bowl students who just returned from Austin, Texas having won 7 of 8 of their matches, placed 3rd in the event, and qualified to go to the National competition at Gallaudet University April 20th -24th to compete against the top 16 schools in the nation.
Not only did they win, they beat other schools by wide margins. All 3 of these sophomore students (Karine Jelalian, Sonan Sahgal, Maggie Smallwood) are Cued Speech students who use the services of Cued Language Transliterators at Woodson. Coaches Shan Pillai and Julie Clinch raised funds, gave hours of trivia/game prep sessions and showered abundant encouragement on the students.
Woodson Chorus
The 3rd payment for the Spring Trip to FL is due on March 2. Chorus families can continue to earn funds toward the trip with RaiseRight through that date.
The next Chorus concert will be on Thursday, March 9 at 7 PM in the Woodson Auditorium and the next Choral Booster meeting on March 13.

Woodson Rifle
The Woodson Rifle Team had a great season! With a 7-1 record, Co-captains Ben Hays and Rushil Punukollu were named to First Team All- Metro. Ella Derrick and Madelyn Bajo, both first year shooters, were named to All-Metro second team. Hanna Lee, Rachel Xu, Matthew Wang, Jonah Hilbert, Yool Lim, Sam Lingenfelter, and Ieva Balunis all earned honorable mention.

The Leadership Classes are once again offering high quality shredded hardwood mulch for purchase.

Student math tutors are available during 5th period return, 5th period lunches and after school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:00-3:45pm.
All sessions take place in B208. Look for the Math Center Flag. Tutors are excited to help students!

Unless they’ve been opted out, students can access Tutor.com through Schoology. Every session is personalized to meet students’ needs from remedial to advanced levels. Sessions focus on conceptual learning and critical thinking—not quick answers.

2023 Fairfax County Teen Job Fairs
Saturday, March 11 from 11am - 1pm at West Springfield HS! Register below to attend!
The 2023 Fairfax County Teen Job Fairs, hosted by Pat Herrity, Springfield District Supervisor, Connection Newspapers, Fairfax County Public Schools, as well as local chambers and organizations, have been announced. There will be three Fairfax County Teen Job Fairs and Career-Building Workshops. The fairs will run on three Saturdays in March.
The fairs are open to all teens in Fairfax County looking for employment, volunteer opportunities, or tips on building their resume. Free table space will be provided to registered businesses and organizations to advertise their available positions. They will also host resume and career building sessions with Chamber of Commerce partners. Beginning January 24, students and employers may register to attend here:

 Join Springfield District Representative Laura Jane Cohen, Braddock District Representative Megan McLaughlin, FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid, and Student Representative to the School Board Michele Togbe for a town hall. Student Representative Applications to the School Board
Each year, in accordance with FCPS Policy 1802, FCPS students have the opportunity to apply for the position of the student representative to the School Board. The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity, representing the interests of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools.
Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply, and they do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC).
The application involves 2 components. Both are required to be considered for the Election.
- Written Applications are due March 17, 2023. 2023 Student Representative to the School Board
- A thirty second candidate statement via Flip Video is due March 31, 2023. Candidates will be emailed a link to record their video on March 20, 2023.
The 2023 election will consist of two parts:
- The first part of the Election is a virtual Primary Election held on April 17, 2023, using FCPS zoom. Candidates have the option to attend the Primary Election. Candidates will be notified by email regarding the Primary Election results.
- The second part of the Election is a General Election held in person on April 19, 2023, at Thomas Jefferson High School. Candidates who advanced from the Primary Election are required to attend the General Election on April 19, 2023.
Additional information and details regarding both the Primary and General Elections will be shared with candidates.
DMV Learners Permit Tests at Woodson
Woodson is pleased to announce that students can take the Virginia DMV learner’s permit test at Woodson. Students will use their school issued laptops and will be given a login just as they do for the SOL tests. If they do NOT have a school laptop, they must contact Mr. O'Hara ahead of time. Personal laptops do NOT work for the test.
Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years 6 months or older on the following Tuesdays at 3:15pm in Room C108: April 25th, May 23rd
Steps to complete the process: You must register in TWO places: ACE (for payment) and DMV for the test ticket.
- Payment: First you must register through the ACE and pay $20.
- Register for this test event at DMV Registration (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
- A customer number is not required, but if you have a DMV ID card you must enter the name, DOB and customer number exactly as it appears on your DMV ID card. Otherwise, enter your full legal name and date of birth and leave the customer number field blank.
- Please provide a parent or student’s email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
- Before taking the two part knowledge test, please STUDY the Driver’s Manual located on DMV’s website.

Attendance
Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.
If your student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office. Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.
Laptop Tech Support Hours
If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.
Our walk-in hours in Room A114 are:
- Odd Days during Learning Seminar
- Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am
- Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)
Any other time you should try to make an appointment using a ticket from the Support Portal.
Late Buses Available Tuesdays and Wednesdays
Late buses are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays through spring. Students may stay after school to participate in clubs/activities and/or receive academic intervention with teachers.
Tuesday and Wednesday late buses start loading around 4:45pm and depart from Woodson at approximately 5:15pm. Students who access the smaller bus runs need to sign up for a bus in Room F122 before lunch each late bus day.
Please note, students may NOT go across the street to the shopping center after school and then return for the late bus.

Staying Home When Sick
FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.
