Message from Ms. Kearns

Dear Lake Braddock Families,

Welcome to March!  Did it come in like a lamb?  Despite the cherry blossoms predicted to bloom this month, Bruin nation is still holding out for a little bit of snow to cover the ground!

March is a busy month here at Lake Braddock as we transition from winter to spring sports and celebrate many of our staff who help make us a better community!  March is Athletic Training Month, so we send our appreciation and thanks to our ATs, Brittany Arndt and Kristyn Wharton, for all their dedication and support to our athletes!  March also celebrates School Social Workers. Thank you to our awesome Social Workers, Nicole White, Anna Ghafoori, and Camille Mountjoy, for helping our students and families achieve their potential!

We also Celebrate the Arts in Schools this month.  Lake Braddock is so fortunate to have so many talented visual artists and musical and theatrical artists!  We look forward to the upcoming concerts, plays, and art show to showcase all those talents.

We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable weekend as we start the countdown to our Spring Break!

Go Bruins!

Lindsey Kearns

social work week

National School Social Work Week March 5-10

March 5-10 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Keep an eye on Lake Braddock's social media next week as we introduce you to our three awesome Social Workers: Anna Ghafoori, Nicole White, and Camille Mountjoy!

arts

March is Celebration of Arts in Our Schools Month!

The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including:

  • Problem solving
  • Creativity
  • Observation
  • Communication

Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K-12.

March has also been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

SRTS-bike-light

SRTS-Bike Light Giveaway

The Safe Routes to School Committee invites your family to try actively commuting to school during February and March!  We are giving away 30 sets of rechargeable bike lights to LBSS families who try walking or rolling to school and then complete this survey by March 31.

SRTS Bike Light Giveaway Form

We suggest you do this activity with your student, and discuss pedestrian and biking safety as you choose a route and travel to school. You can try the alternate method of commuting to LBSS at any time, such as on a weekend or on a school day. We hope the result will be more students who enjoy the mental health, academic and social benefits of active commuting to school.

If you live more than a few miles from the school, you can participate by driving part of the way to school, such as to a library or park near Lake Braddock, and then walking or biking the rest of the way.

SRTS Walkabout Audit Recommendations

The Draft VDOT walkabout Audit Report is available for review and comment. Please contact LBSS.SRTS@gmail.com to see a copy of the draft report. The final report, which we will use as a template to address infrastructure and traffic control needs near our school, should be published by late March.

Reminder!  As the weather gets warmer, more students will be out walking or biking. Please follow these tips when driving in our community.

For more information check out our page on the PTSA website.
