Atoms Athletics Highlights WINTER RECAP
Boys basketball had an up and down season through the first half of the year. The team started off the season with a win against talented up and coming Bethel Academy and followed it up splitting their two games in the Robinson Tip-Off. The team got off to a slow start in district play dropping their first two games before winning three of their next four to get them above 500 heading into the second half of district play. The Atoms struggled to start dropping three of four with the highlight win coming on a buzzer beater on senior night from senior Sam Dailey. The Atoms then got a hot streak winning their last four games of district play including a huge win over Edison in the final game of the season to capture the #3 seed in the National District Tournament. The Atoms beat Lewis in the first round before falling to Edison in the semifinals. The Atoms moved on to the Occoquan Regional Tournament falling in a last second heartbreaker to Lake Braddock.
Girls basketball completed their season with a loss to Alexandria City in the Occoquan Regional Tournament. The Atoms won their first game of the year over Park View. They played hard throughout the season, showing grit and competitiveness each game. The Atoms went through district play winning games over Lewis and eventual #4 seed Justice. The young Atoms showed improvement throughout the season highlighted by freshman Ava Sewall who averaged close to 18 points per game.
Gymnastics had a successful year with many of the gymnasts being underclassman. The team showed growth throughout the year with many gymnasts improving their scores each meet. The team looks forward to continued growth next year!
Wrestling has a bright future at Annandale. Many wrestlers who competed in varsity matches were underclassman. The Grappling Atoms traveled to multiple invitationals out of the area this year, highlighted with their trip to Morgantown, WV, where the Atoms wrestled against teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania. The Atoms moved through the season, improving and gaining experience before the district tournament. The National District tournament saw success for many wrestlers with senior Marcelo Pozo winning the district championship in the 120lb weight class. Three other wrestlers were able to get on the podium at districts giving them higher seeding leading into the Occoquan Tournament. Marcelo Pozo and Jordy Lopez Funes had a successful run through the tournament qualifying for the state tournament in Virginia Beach.
Indoor Track saw many athletes achieve personal records throughout the season! The Atoms qualified the most athletes for the Occoquan Region Meet since pre-Covid highlighted by National District Champions Miles Lanham (Triple Jump and 300m) and Noah Williams (Shot Put). The girls 4x800 team took an exciting 2nd place at the district meet, while the boys 4x200 took 3rd. Junior Pam Moura's performance at districts not only helped her qualify for regions but for the National Championships as well. The Occoquan Region Meet continued to see personal records set by Noah Williams (Shot put) and Kierra (1000m) but falling just short of qualifying for the state meet. Senior Miles Lanham was the lone Atom to qualify for the state meet, looking to defend his triple jump state championship.
Swim/Dive saw similar results to Indoor Track with many athletes setting personal records in the pool. The Atoms competed hard throughout the season with the most competitive race coming on senior night as senior relay teams competed against Mr. DeRose, Mr. Sutphin, Coach O'Neill, and Coach Lucas! The seniors ultimately won but it was a fun night by all. The Atoms had a great showing at the National District Meet with Divers Nathan Tran (3rd Place) and Morgan Milman (7th place) qualifying for the Region meet. In the pool, several swimmers and relay teams qualify for the region meet, highlighted by Colin McGee winning the 200m breaststroke. Personal records continued at the region meet with the girls 200 medley relay team improving their time by over three seconds from prelims. Finn Sample won the B finals after being an alternate after prelims. Colin McGee finished third in the breaststroke qualifying for the state meet in Hampton.

Supporting Orchestra - Benevity
PLEASE check your corporate policies, many companies filter donations for employees through an entity called Benevity. ANNANDALE HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA BOOSTERS is now registered with Benevity.
Benevity is a company that can help turn your volunteer hours into Donations for Orchestra!!! Please check with your corporate HR to see if your company uses Benevity. If your company does use Benevity, they may either match donations you make to the Orchestra Boosters, or you may simply need to record hours that you participate in orchestra events and your company may provide money to the Orchestra Boosters. (Some companies TRIPLE donations to charities made through Benevity and others offer a certain dollar amount of donation for time you're already spending participating in Orchestra events)
We know that Google, Visa, UPS, Starbucks, Booz Allen Hamilton, Microsoft and Netflix offer these options, but many mor in the area may as well.
Athletic Training Wrap
Our Athletic Trainers, Ryan Hughes and Kathy Ayers, work really hard behind the scenes of our Athletic events and they would like to share some tips and advice they give the student-athletes at Annandale High School everyday.
