Local Author Terry Catasús Jennings
Visits Herndon Elementary

Terry Jennings and children

Local author Terry Catasús Jennings visited grades K-6 at Herndon Elementary on Thursday and Friday.  She shared her latest book, The Little House of Hope! Students learned about the hardships that immigrant families can face and that kindness can go a long way to help everyone.  Click here for her books.

Thank you to our amazing PTA for making this visit possible.

Administrator Avenue

Dear Bee Families,

We have less than a 100 days left of school, can you believe it? We are so proud of our bees and how they have grown. We welcome parents/guardians to volunteer in their child’s classroom and dine with their children for lunch. FCPS policy requires all visitors to report to the office first, show a photo ID, check in, and wear a visitor’s badge while in the school building. If you are here for lunch, the cafeteria should be your only destination. If you wish to check your child out after lunch or volunteering, please come to the office so that we can contact the classroom teacher. Please note that visiting classrooms is not permitted. Thank you for your understanding and support so that we can minimize disruption to instructional time.

Thank you to our amazing PTA for sponsoring our Author Visit this week. Our bees loved this experience!

As always, we are a team. Please let us know what questions you may have.

Warmly,

Candace J. Hunstad           Elizabeth Baxter         Greg Brotemarkle

Heritage night time and date

We would love for families to decorate a paper doll in their heritage to display at school for Heritage Night!  Paper dolls were sent home in students’ backpacks last Thursday, February 9th.

Please cut out the doll first. Next, complete the information on the back of the doll, this identifies the owner.  Now you are ready to start creating your doll.

You may use whatever you have available (cloth, ribbons, construction paper, markers and crayons, etc.) to create your special person. You can create the face by drawing and coloring it or by placing your child’s picture on it.

Webinars and Events for Parents

FCPS’ Parent Resource Center (PRC) is dedicated to helping adults support the success of all students. The PRC will present the following webinars and in-person events in March:

Parental Notifications and Policy 3290: Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content

A Virginia law passed last spring requires schools to create a policy for parental notification of sexually explicit content/materials. In December 2022, the School Board adopted FCPS Policy 3290: Parental Notification Regarding Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content

FCPS has had policies in place for many years regarding the review of instructional materials, communication with parents, and options for alternative instructional materials.

An expectation of this new policy is the 30-day parental notification requirement of sexually explicit content in instructional materials assigned or selected by teachers. After reviewing the notification letter, parents or caregivers who prefer to choose alternative instructional materials for their child must submit this form to the appropriate teacher within the 30-day notification window. View Policy 3290 for more information.

FCPS Parent Resource Center

The FCPS Parent Resource Center offers a welcoming and engaging environment for families, educators, and community members. It provides access to information and resources to support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities.
