BMP is hosting a Career Day on June 9th from 2:15 - 3:45 p.m. and we are looking for presenters! On Career Day, we will have presenters share information to our grades 3-5 students about their careers. This can be Bren Mar Park parents/guardians or businesses with family connections. Our goal is to have a variety of fields represented in order to give students an opportunity to envision themselves in different careers.
Presenters will share in three, 20-minute rotations:
- training requirements of their occupation
- satisfactions and frustrations of their job
- which school skills are used in their job
- what a typical day might include
- related jobs in their career field
- and anything else that they feel students might be interested in!
If you are interested in presenting, please fill out this google form or email Kristin Feathers at kmfeathers@fcps.edu.
Hello Families! This is your librarian, Mrs. Watson. Reading is my most favorite thing to do, and I’m always trying to share my love of reading with our BMP students and families. Did you know these important facts about reading 20 minutes a day?
- Reading builds your vocabulary. Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes you to 1.8 million words per year!
- Reading lowers your stress levels.
- Reading makes you smarter. When you read, you’re creating new circuits and connections in your brain.
- Reading before bedtime promotes sleep. Doctors recommend it as a way to relax and wind down from the day.
- Reading strengthens your imagination and creativity.
- Reading makes you more empathetic. When you read, you put yourself in someone else’s shoes and you get other perspectives.
It’s important for kids to develop a daily reading habit. Family members can help with this by reading to kids from very young ages. Reading together builds a bond and is just plain fun. Once your child begins to read on his or her own, encourage that but continue to read aloud as well. You can choose books that your child can understand, but are just slightly harder, to help boost your child’s reading growth. It’s also an excellent opportunity to choose books that have sensitive topics that you may want to talk about with your kids. Sometimes it’s easier to talk about what a character should do in certain situations and it can lead to some great conversations. It’s also a great opportunity to read aloud in a first language to help kids be truly multilingual. Whatever you do – read, read, read!!
Want some quick tips to lift your mood? FCPS shares thoughts and ideas to support you and your student.
Mood and emotions impact daily performance and ability to learn. According to a happiness researcher at University of California, Riverside, 40 percent of happiness is influenced by the active steps we take to feel better.
Every person experiences mood changes. But, if you’re feeling “a little down” or sluggish, consider these tips to lift your mood:
-
Chat! In-person, not text. Talk with a friend or someone who’s cheerful.
-
Smile! Evidence suggests that looking happy can lead to a good mood.
-
Laugh! Laughing produces a chemical reaction that elevates your mood and reduces stress.
-
Think positively! Turn negative thinking into positive thinking. For example, the next time your friend is annoying you, take 30 seconds to think of things you like about your friend.
