Caregiver Coffee Meeting PLEASE COME JOIN US!

Parents will learn about the Elementary to Middle school transition process. 

This information meeting will cover the bell schedule, course sequencing and academic advising. Followed by a question-and-answer session after. 

Caregivers are invited to attend this informational meeting IN PERSON presented By Ms. Fealey school counselor at Holmes Middle School.

Tuesday, February 28 at Weyanoke ES

Location: Weyanoke SACC Room

Time: From 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The information will be presented in English and Spanish.

spring picture day is FEbruary 28

Lifetouch Spring Pictures

On February 28, 2023, Lifetouch will be here to take individual and class pictures. Order forms will be sent home with your student.  You may order online using Picture ID # EVTF7KD2R or by completing the order form and enclosing payment by check or cash (only exact amount). Orders must be returned to school by the date of the pictures.  Please remember when ordering, that you must purchase a picture package before ordering any add-ons.  Volunteers are needed for picture day.  If interested, please contact Ms. Mills at 703-813-5406.

School Board Approves 2023-24 School Year Calendar

The Fairfax County School Board approved a calendar for the 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 school years at their February 9 meeting. Learn more about the approved calendar

The first day of the 2023-24 school year will be Monday, August 21, and the last day will be Wednesday, June 12

Developing a school year calendar is a balancing act, involving multiple factors that must be considered. Community input is one of those factors, and we appreciate our community for being involved in the calendar development process.


School-Zone Speed Camera Pilot Program Launched

Fairfax County has launched a speed camera pilot program targeting several school zones where speeding is common. Speed cameras have been installed in the following locations:

  • Chesterbrook Elementary School
  • Irving Middle School
  • Key Middle School
  • London Towne Elementary School
  • Sleepy Hollow Elementary School
  • South County Middle School
  • Terraset Elementary School
  • West Springfield High School

An additional school zone speed camera near Oakton High School will be installed. Thank you to Fairfax County for helping to ensure we’re all more safe as we travel to and from school!

Important: Changes to Your Snap Benefits

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government passed a law to temporarily increase SNAP benefits to support families. Recently, the federal government changed the law and the temporary increase to the SNAP benefits ended February 16, 2023. Beginning in March, all SNAP benefits will return to normal amounts, without the added supplement.

  • The Virginia Department of Social Services has created a temporary information line. Please call: 1-855-635-4370
  • If you need food now, call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning: 703-222-0880
  • For more food resources, visit the Human Service Resource Guide online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/HSRG/, and search “food.”

If you receive SNAP you may also be eligible for Medicaid, TANF, Energy Assistance, Child Care Assistance and more. Apply at CommonHelp.Virginia.gov/access or apply by phone at 1-833-5-CALL-VA (1-833-522-5582).


COVID

Find Free COVID-19 Testing in Your Community

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has launched a COVID-19 Testing Locator website, which allows consumers to search for free testing sites near them. Testing is available at pharmacies, commercial laboratory sites, community sites, and retail locations. Results are typically provided within 24-48 hours.


Native Youth Community Project

VTEC is registering students from Virginia's federal and state recognized tribes to receive free college and career prep courses.

Eligible students can receive financial help and guidance for:

  • Standardized testing and prep
  • Financial aid application
  • College applications
  • Scholarship opportunities
  • Career training & certification 
  • College & career recruitment

General PTA Meeting February 23rd

In the Weyanoke Library

Meeting from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Guest Speakers: School Counselors: Ms. Nagel and Ms. Skorski.

Representatives from Girls on the Run will be there from 6 to 7 p.m. to answer questions about the program.

We will discuss activities, new clubs, and the upcoming PTA election.

There will be Spanish interpretation and childcare as always.

Congratulations Sabrina for winning the bee! Sabrina did an amazing job and will move on to the Fairfax County Spelling Bee later in Spring. Congratulations also goes to our Second Place winner, Sean.

Girls on the Run:

A New After School Club Starting at Weyanoke for 3-5th Grade Girls

This is a 10-week positive youth development program for elementary school girls in grades 3-5. Participants will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity, and learn important lessons to last a lifetime! Practices: March 6 - May 17 on Monday and Wednesdays from 3:30-5pm. 

This club is FREE for 3-5th grade girls at Weyanoke but you have to register! Paper registration forms went home in Wednesday folders and can also be picked up at the front office.


Project Happiness Where the science of happiness meets the art of living

Project Happiness

Registration has begun for our new afterschool club, Project Happiness! We are very excited to be working with the school counselors to bring this amazing program to Weyanoke. Follow the link for more info and to register:

Career Day

We are looking for community & parent volunteers to share what they do with students on March 24, 2023.

You can volunteer for just part or the whole day. Students don’t just learn from their teachers. Community members and leaders play a vital role in a student’s education.

We are looking for ALL KINDS of occupations, business owners, hourly/salary, part-time/ full-time, any and all industries. We want to give students the best idea of the MANY options available to them after they graduate high school. For more info and to volunteer: https://bit.ly/careerdayWES
