Read Across America Week
Key Center will be celebrating Read Across America week of February 27th through March 3rd. We hope that you join in the fun!
Monday, February 27th- Dress as your favorite book character
Tuesday, February 28th- Leaders from Central Office and the Region 3 Office have been invited to be at Key Center as guest readers
Wednesday, March 1st- Key Center's Admin staff and school leaders will be acting as guest readers
Thursday, March 2nd- Students are invited to look through a collection of gently used donated books and select their favorite to take home
Reminder: March 2nd is a 2 hour Early Release Day and March 3rd is a Student Holiday
SIBSHOPS: An Exciting, In-person Workshop for Brothers and Sisters of Children with Special Needs
The Sibshop workshops are for children in grades 2-6 enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools who have siblings with special needs to:
- Meet other siblings in a relaxed setting.
- Celebrate the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of children with special needs.
- Share sibling experiences and receive peer support.
- Play games and have fun!
Friday, March 3, 2023, 9 a.m.- noon at Providence Community Center

Summer Programming
The dates for the FCPS Extended School Year (ESY) program have been released. The program will run July 5th to July 28th. The bell schedule for Key Center’s ESY programming is 7:45 AM to 11:00 AM.
Information about Therapeutic Recreation programming has not yet been released. Details will be shared with Key Center families as soon as we receive them
School-Zone Speed Camera Pilot Program Launched
Fairfax County has launched a speed camera pilot program targeting several school zones where speeding is common. Speed cameras have been installed in the following locations:
- Chesterbrook Elementary School
- Irving Middle School
- Key Middle School
- London Towne Elementary School
- Sleepy Hollow Elementary School
- South County Middle School
- Terraset Elementary School
- West Springfield High School
An additional school zone speed camera near Oakton High School will be installed. Thank you to Fairfax County for helping to ensure we’re all more safe as we travel to and from school!
School Board Approves 2023-24 School Year Calendar
The Fairfax County School Board approved a calendar for the 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 school years at their February 9 meeting. Learn more about the approved calendar.
The first day of the 2023-24 school year will be Monday, August 21, and the last day will be Wednesday, June 12.
Developing a school year calendar is a balancing act, involving multiple factors that must be considered. Community input is one of those factors, and we appreciate our community for being involved in the calendar development process.
Bus Driver Appreciation Day
🚍Today is Bus Driver Appreciation Day. We are grateful to our Key Center bus staff. They are an essential part of our students’ education. To let bus staff know how much they are appreciated, at arrival time this morning Key Center provided them with a coffee bar and fresh muffins baked and thoughtfully packaged by Marielle Sontag’s 17-22 class. Please join us in letting your bus staff know how much they are appreciated!
