This week, Timber Lane ES welcomed its first Very Important Partners, Silvia Vilalta & Russ Waddell. Silvia and Russ had the opportunity to support in their child's classrooms and other areas of our school. The program is of to a fantastic start! One of our VIPs shared that their favorite part was "helping the kids and talking to them." They also shared that they would love more time as the two hours they spent here went by so fast.
The TLES Very Important Partners' program has three main goals: first, students gain positive role models; second, caregivers gain insight into daily life at school, & finally Timber Lane ES gains an even stronger partnership with the community it serves. Assistant Principal Shele Banford initiated the program with a face to face information session and training for the approximately 70 caregivers in attendance earlier this month. A virtual information and training session will be held virtually on March 16 at 5:30PM for interested caregivers who were unable to attend the first session.
We are looking forward to welcoming and working with two new VIPs next week and the many more in the months ahead.

A Virginia law passed in spring 2022 requires schools to create a policy for parental notification of sexually explicit content/materials. In December 2022, the School Board adopted FCPS Policy 3290: Parental Notification Regarding Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content.
FCPS has had policies in place for many years regarding the review of instructional materials, communication with parents, and options for alternative instructional materials.
An expectation of this new policy is the 30-day parental notification requirement of sexually explicit content in instructional materials assigned or selected by teachers. After reviewing the notification letter, parents or caregivers who prefer to choose alternative instructional materials for their child must submit this form to the appropriate teacher within the 30-day notification window. View Policy 3290 for more information.

Please see the table below for Timber Lane’s SOL testing dates. It is important that your child attend school on the dates designated for them to test. Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest the night prior. More information will be sent home in Wednesday folders over the next 2 weeks, including a retest permission form. A retest is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing). If you believe that your student would benefit from the retake option, you can fill out this Google Form granting permission or sign and send back the paper copy that will be in Wednesday folders indicating you give permission.
More information on the Standards of Learning assessments can be found here. Please reach out to Shele Banford (703) 206-5300 as questions arise.
