News from the Library

Our re-opened maker-space is a hit with students!  A new activity will be available to 4th and 5th grade students each month; after learning how to make that item, materials will be available all month for students to work with during free time in library or to take away and finish at a later time.  This month’s woven heart basket has been really challenging for most students – but that’s ok because we are capable of doing hard things!  This ties right in with the school’s focus on the Portrait of a Graduate trait of being Goal-Directed and Resilient, and students have been doing an amazing job of trying again until they get the knack of this unique woven item!  Younger grades also have access to targeted activities and have been showing their creative and collaborative sides.  Great work in the library!

Understand SEL evaluator results (social-emotional learning)

Recently, the SEL Screener results were sent home.  The evaluator is used to gather information about your student's perceptions of their abilities, relationships, mood, and school environment. SEL is the process through which all youth and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and supportive decisions (CASEL, 2021). Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through twelfth.  Instruction is seen as a partnership between parents and guardians, the school, and the community to support learning essential for the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to exclude their child from all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are excluded receive age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to exclude your child from all or part of FLE for this school year, opt-out forms will be included in your child's back-to-school/orientation packages and are available online for.  Complete the opt-out form and return it to your child's school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed descriptions of the grade-level program are available online at Elementary (K-6).  FLE grade-level specific lessons and the media for which FCPS has streaming rights are available to parents online at Schoology.  Parents/guardians log in to Schoology with the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) parent account.  Grade-level specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax City Regional Library (this location has no means).  Grade-level specific lessons and media that are not streamed online are available for review in your child's school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Questions about the program can be addressed at your child's school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu
