Announcing a Celebration of Reading Next Week!
February 27 - March 2
Deer Park will celebrate with the following activities:
![attend](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/VAEDUFCPS/2023/02/7188946/screenshot-2023-02-22-145714_original.jpg) Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade.

Black History Month
To celebrate Black History Month at Deer Park, all classes PK-6 chose a famous Black American across various careers (arts, sciences, entertainment, education, literature, politics, etc.) to read and learn more about as a class. Classes in grades PK-3 created posters with their learning to display on the first floor of Deer Park and classes in grades 4-6 created Google slides that are being shown on the lobby TV and you can also view them here. We also have several community members and parents who have filmed short videos about their careers to show on our Deer Park news to highlight various career opportunities.

Lexia/Power Up Reading Challenge!
All students have been challenged to read daily to meet our total goal of 175,000 minutes.
Students in kindergarten through second grade to average 15 minutes on Lexia/Power Up per school day and our students in third through sixth grade to average 20 minutes per school day.
Minutes are being closely monitored and growth toward our goal is being shared both on the morning news and on a meter in the front hallway.
We are almost to our goal! Keep reading so we can celebrate on March 2nd!
|
When we meet our challenge, we will have morning meeting as usual, attend a pep rally to celebrate our students' hard work and achievement, and then break into grade level groups to work through activities and challenges that we hope will inspire, engage, and create team building opportunities for all our students. Activities will vary from one grade to the next, but may include board games, cooking, arts and crafts, sports, and minute to win it games among others.
On this day, students will eat lunch in their homeroom classrooms with their teachers. Hot lunches will still be available for students to pick up from the cafeteria. Our day will end with a closing reflection conversation with their homeroom teachers and a special snack of popsicles provided by the school.
We do truly hope our celebration on March 2nd is a special day for everyone!
