Fox Mill Focus February 17 2023

Friday, February 17th, 2023

Happy Friday, Fox Mill Family,

What a lovely week it has been! We saw acts of kindness and sharing across all grade levels throughout the week. The Office Staff also joined in the spirit of sharing by hosting a Soup treat for our Fox Mill Staff.

We observed- Mrs. Neville and Mrs. Bachman’s fourth graders as they celebrated kindness, community, and creativity on Valentine’s Day. Students started their day by making valentines for the pets at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Each student selected a shelter pet and crafted a personalized card. Later in the day, students unleashed their creativity to turn their plain Valentine’s bag into something completely unexpected. Bags were transformed into minions, ketchup and mustard, spaceships, pets, and Harry Potter characters. Throughout the month students are working collaboratively to build a chain of kindness that stretches the length of the fourth-grade hallway. Each link displays an act of kindness, compliment, affirmation, or sign of appreciation.

Here are a few updates:

Back Gate Closure

Please be advised that as of Monday, February 20th, our construction team will begin working on the stairs leading to the back gate. As a result, the gate will be closed for arrival and dismissal. The project is expected to last for six weeks.  There will no staff assigned to that area.

Some of the temporary walls have come down along the corridor leading from the library, showing us signs that very soon our students and staff in the outside learning cottages will finally make their way into their newly renovated classrooms in the B and C Wings.

Field Trips

As we prepare for the various field trips, we would like to remind you to reiterate to your students that classroom rules still apply on route to, as well as at the location of the excursion. Students should also always remain with their teachers or chaperone. This is also an opportunity to update the clinic of any changes to your child’s medical records.  Please contact our school clinic if anything changes.

Talent Show

Please save the date- February 24th at 7pm – for the 6th Grade Talent Show under the theme “Time travel to different decades.”

Read Across America Week

Read Across America Week is February 27-March 2nd.  The students at Fox Mill ES will be participating in many activities to celebrate reading. We are excited that we will be having our first assembly in three years.  Local author Debra Shumaker will be visiting Fox Mill ES on Monday, February 27th.  She will do three presentations to grades K-1; 2-3 and 4-6.  We will also have guest readers from the central offices visiting classes throughout the week.  We will end the week on March 2nd with students and teachers wearing their favorite pajamas and having a read-in with their grade level.

Parent Workshop with The College Funding Coach

Our counselors, Mrs. Keating -Labas and Ms. Barry have been working hard to provide college resources for your family.  They are excited to announce that Fox Mill Elementary School is hosting the College Funding Coach via Zoom on March 21st @ 6.30 pm. This event is for any family wanting to learn how to pay for college (Preschool - High School).

The College Funding Coach was founded in 2002 to help families better understand the complex strategies for paying for college and making higher education more affordable. Planning for these expenses has become essential. Some families have children attending college next year, and others have years to prepare, but the fears of tackling these monumental and rising costs are the same. The College Funding Coach® is here to help families figure out HOW to pay for it and still retire one day. This interactive workshop, Little-Known Secrets of Paying for College, teaches parents the rules of the game when it comes to paying for their child’s education. Please join Fox Mill Elementary School via Zoom on March 21st @ 6.30 PM. This is information you can't afford to miss! Please take a look around our website The College Funding Coach®, for helpful resources and information.  To register for the upcoming information session please click the link below: https://www.thecollegefundingcoach.org/class/fox-mill-elementary-school-3/.
