Dear families,
We have now completed half the schoolyear and are officially on our way toward a VERY busy spring! Upcoming events include our first annual Spelling Bee, our annual PTA fundraiser, and our first ever Washington Mill Talent Show! Students have been after school now several times preparing for our Spelling Bee and our Talent Show and both events are shaping up to be exciting evenings for our students! We also have PTA after-school clubs beginning, our annual fundraiser, and a VERY important safety reminder below. Please take a look.

Our WMES Spelling Bee takes place next week on February 22. We have approximately 30 students that have answered the call and are striving to become the Washington Mill ultimate spelling champion! The winner of our school bee will move on to compete at the regional level. Many thanks to our librarian, Ms. Dugan, who is guiding students through this experience, along with the help of PTA volunteer, Arioth Smirne! |

Our WMES Talent Show is proving to be an exciting event as well! We had so many students seeking to be part of this event that our organizer, Ms. Sparrow-Kamara, had to spread the show over two nights instead of one. Talent Show information for participants will go home to families this week. Students are displaying their love of dance, raps, martial arts, singing, artwork, and much more! |
Also rapidly approaching is our annual PTA fundraiser. This year’s event is titled the Wolfpack Wobble and is sure to be a wonderful experience for students. While many fundraisers can be mundane and rather uninviting, our Wolfpack Wobble is designed to create school spirit and be an enjoyable experience for our students. Students are recognized for registering and working together as class teams in addition to their individual fundraising efforts. We will have our kick-off at the beginning of the month and our culminating event at the end of March. The PTA uses all funds raised to support field trips, after-school clubs, school-community events, and beautification for our students. It’s an incredibly worthy cause!

Speaking of PTA after-school clubs, I’m excited to remind you that after-school clubs for our students will start March 15 and run every Wednesday through April 26. The PTA has used the money from past fundraisers to plan a wide variety of activities for 1st-6th grade students that are interested. Interested families can see the flyer that was sent in Thursday folders last week and attached here as well. Registration is lottery based and open through February 23. |

I also want families to know that our school renovation is almost complete! The building is done except for some punch list items and all we’re waiting for at this point is the completion of our playground. Design & Construction is waiting on the arrival of a bridge for our new playground. They will then be able to install, demo the old playground, and finalize the work on our fields. Many students have told me about their excitement and we’re looking forward to the full completion this spring!

Finally, I have a very important safety request to ask families and staff. We have many cars that come to school during arrival and dismissal times and it’s important that we take care to slow down and keep students safe. I’m proud of our very structured arrival/dismissal process, but we need your help if you are driving to our school at those high-volume times. Even in the most structured and heavily staffed environments, a student can step out suddenly or be crossing the street and I’m asking that we all slow down and be patient and courteous for our students. It’s very easy to get busy and be thinking about that next appointment but it’s imperative that we slow ourselves and keep a lookout. Thank you in advance for paying attention to your speed and driving practices around our school.
