Counseling graphic
  • National School Counseling Week 2023, “School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), was celebrated this week, Feb. 6–10, 2023, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  Thank you to all those who helped us celebrate National School Counselor Week over the last few days!  We are very thankful for our school counseling team!!

Join us at West Potomac High School for Pyramid Night!

  • The West Potomac PTSA along with the other local PTAs in our pyramid, warmly invites you to join us at West Potomac High School on Friday, February 10 for "Pyramid Night", to cheer on the West Potomac Girls Basketball team play against Woodson HS. It is also West Potomac's senior night so please come cheer on these special girls! The main event will start at 7:30pm, and there will be a DJ, prizes, and the opportunity to preorder an exclusive West Potomac Pyramid t-shirt! This is a great event to meet other local families, as well as Principals, students and PTA leaders from our neighboring schools. Entry is just $5 per person. We encourage anyone attending from our school to wear their favorite spiritwear to represent our BELOVED WEST POTOMAC. Look out for more information and details next week. We hope to see you there!
  • Please join us THIS coming Monday, February 6th at 6:30pm in the library. In addition to updates from Dr. Millard and the PTSA, we welcome Jessica Kidwell who will speak on Neurodiversity. Jessica is the host of the podcast, Neuroversity, a space to learn about and elevate the stories of the neurodivergent community.  As the mother of an autistic daughter and a son who has ongoing issues with anxiety, she found herself looking for sources of information that could help her understand how to be a better advocate and ally for them both.  She is also the co-host of the podcast We Should Talk About That, which aims to connect people by having hard conversations about uncomfortable topics in a vulnerable and safe way.

Second Quarter A and A/B Honor Roll Celebration – Volunteers Needed

  • Help us celebrate the hard work of our all As and A/B 2nd quarter student(s)!  We will be serving up a Chips and Queso bar from Moe’s, a student favorite, on Friday, February 17th during all four lunches.  We need volunteers to help set up, serve and clean up.  No experience is necessary and it is a great way to meet other parents and students.

West Potomac Band - All District Band

  • Congratulations to our band students that participated in the All District Band concert last weekend! All District Band is kind of like All Stars or All Conference Teams in sports, but all the band students at the 14 high schools in our area band and orchestra district have to audition individually before a panel of judges in order to make the “all star” bands - the Wind Ensemble (1st team) and the Symphonic Band (2nd team). The All District Bands have guest conductors from college schools of music and they have about two days to learn and perform four to five new pieces at the concluding concert. West Potomac had the most students in the two bands of all the high schools this year.
  • Students named to the Wind Ensemble: Alex Ferrari, James Leggett, Stuart Murphy, Ginny Nelson, Nick Ray, David Rubinstein, Jack Siegfried, Harry Shinkle, Kye Greenfeld, Jessica Vasquez-Luna, Abby LaFleur.
  • Students named to the Symphonic Band: Luke Giglio, Andy Helvey, Piper Qutub, Tyler Siegfried, Stephanie Kulinski, Anna Rathfon, Karanda Duncans, Joseph Rastovski, Delia Scott, Nicolas Ries, Eva Joshua, and Josh Thomann

West Potomac Band

  • Come out to the Springbank Auditorium Jazz Club on Friday, Feb. 10 to listen to some fun, jazzy tunes and celebrate Valentine's Day early!  Springbank Auditorium stage will be transformed to our own jazz club for our two jazz bands and guest student vocalists. This is not your ordinary concert, folks. This is a chance to listen to some toe tappin music, hang out with friends, and do a little dancing, if you like. Tickets are required. They are $5.00 and will be on sale at lunches next week and at the door on Feb. 10.

SAT/ACT Test Prep Upcoming Events

Do You Know Your Test Preference?

  • Most students will show a strong preference for either the SAT or ACT format. This preference usually results in students naturally testing the SAT equivalent of 100 points higher on their preferred test. Sponsored by PTSA, mock tests are offered on campus to help students determine their preferred format and establish baseline test scores – not to mention the benefits of practice. Sophomores can make their junior year less hectic by determining test preference now! Juniors, get a little extra practice!

Mock (Practice) Tests:

  • Walk-In registration for mocks ($28.00) available as space allows. Checks should be payable to WPHS PTSA.
  • Mock ACT Date: 02/18/23 Saturday, 9:00am - 1:15pm, $23 Sign Up
  • Mock SAT Date: 02/18/23 Saturday, 9:00am - 12:45pm, $23 Sign Up
  • Mock SAT Date: 03/11/23 Saturday, 9:00am - 12:45pm, $23 Sign Up
  • Mock ACT Date: 03/11/23 Saturday, 9:15am - 1:30pm, $23 Sign Up

Why Take a Mock SAT or ACT?

  • Did you know that 54% of students show a natural increase the second time they take a real test? Use the mock to practice test time management skills – see if you have the ability to apply the content and strategies learned while studying when in an official test environment.  Test your mental endurance.  Earn confidence for the “real thing.”

Increase Your College Choices

  • Now is the time to find out where you are missing the most points on your SAT or ACT.  Take a mock and use the individualized score report to focus your limited study time.  Report includes suggested “homework” in popular prep books.
