The Lexia/Power Up Reading Challenge continues!

The Lexia/Power Up reading program is an adaptive blended learning program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for students of all abilities, helping them to make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn. There has been significant data collected to show that Lexia usage directly correlates with an increase in iReady reading scores which in turn increases Reading SOL scores as well.

During this challenge, our goal is for all students in kindergarten through second grade to average 15 minutes on Lexia/Power Up per school day and our students in third through sixth grade to average 20 minutes per school day.

Our overall goal for the entire month of February is for our students to work on Lexia/Power Up for a total of 175,000 minutes. Minutes are being closely monitored and growth toward our goal is being shared both on the morning news and on a meter in the front hallway.

We are halfway to our goal as of this past Tuesday! Keep reading so we can achieve our goal and celebrate on March 2nd!

Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month at Deer Park, all classes Preschool to 6th grade chose a famous Black American across various careers (arts, sciences, entertainment, education, literature, politics, etc.) to read and learn more about as a class. Classes in grades PS-3 created posters with their learning to display on the first floor of Deer Park and classes in grades 4-6 created Google slides that are being shown on the lobby TV. We also have several community members and parents who have filmed short videos about their careers to show on our Deer Park news to highlight various career opportunities.

Spotlight on Trauma & Coping

It is February and a time when the recognition and promotion of the resilience and contributions of African Americans is celebrated. Historical trauma is critical to understanding black mental health. African Americans have always thrived through the connection of family. There is an intersection between trauma, coping, and substance misuse. Studies show that about 61% of adults have had at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE) according to the CDC. Childhood trauma manifests in many ways and when carried into adulthood, it can create a cycle of adverse experiences that affect future generations.

Trauma prevention and intervention strategies are more important than ever in post-COVID. During the height of the pandemic there were heightened feelings of unsafety, struggles with increased time spent in stressful family environments. Earlier ACEs studies highlighted traumatic events in the household as primary factors leading to future substance abuse, misuse, and lack of feeling safe and secure. Current ACEs studies have expanded the categories of traumatic events to include experiences such as exposure to racism, discrimination, and historical trauma. Effective coping skills or a brilliant strategy increases levels of resilience and feelings of wellbeing.

Coping strategies include:

  1. Developing healthy relationships (internal and external support)
  2. Teaching self-regulation skills
  3. Encouragement
  4. Increasing self-esteem
  5. Promoting independence and strength
  6. Modeling healthy behavior when dealing with difficult situations
  7. Early intervention and mental health care
