Atoms Athletics and Activities (02/13-02/18)

Atoms Athletics & Activities

Atom Nation,

What a week it has been for Annandale Atoms Athletics and Activities. The regular season portion of our winter seasons came to end last night with boys and girls basketball. Both teams now move on to the National District Tournament that begins Tuesday evening. Indoor track had many athletes set personal best at the District Championship meet with two athletes coming away individual district champions. Wrestling had a successful region tournament with two wrestlers qualifying for the state meet in Virginia Beach. Swim had a successful region meet with one swimmer moving on to the state meet for the first time in 7 years. Theatre One Acts performs Monday at Fairfax High School in the VHSL Regionals. What a time to be a supporter of Atoms Athletics and Activities!

Our athletic teams and performing arts continue their hard work and dedication to making the Annandale community proud!  As we begin to wrap up our winter season and look forward to our spring seasons, we encourage our community to come out and show their support!

Go Atoms!

Coaches Corner

Check out what our Atom's Coaches are saying about their programs! Each week our coaches will give a recap, provide a look ahead, or recognize a student-athlete.

BOYS BASKETBALL, Jerome McAvoy:

The Boys Basketball program is rolling. The Varsity team has won  in a row against Justice, TJ, Mount Vernon, and finished off the regular season by beating #2 Edison. With the win over Edison, the team clinched the #3 seed in the upcoming National District Tournament and will play at home Tuesday evening vs Lewis! Our seniors are healthy and playing their best basketball off season. Our freshman and JV teams played hard down the stretch of the season and their growth and development is a reason why this program has a bright future!

GIRLS BASKETBALL, Kenny Gregory:

The Varsity Girls team have gone 1-2 with a strong win vs Justice last week with Susan Aburish and Ava Sewall leading the way. Ava broke her single game record with an astounding 37 points vs Thomas Jefferson. The team finished the regular season falling to Edison Friday night. We move on to District Quarterfinals Tuesday at Mount Vernon.

WRESTLING, Josh Damico:

The Grappling Atoms competed in the Regional Tournament this past Wednesday and Thursday. Qualifying for the state tournament in VA Beach next week was Senior Marcelo Pozo with a 3rd place finish at 120 lbs and Sophomore Jordy Lopez-Funes with a 4th place finish at 157 lbs. Also winning matches were Sophomores Dom Vejcik (150 lbs) and Sebastian Jaldin (144 lbs). The young team improved on its finish from last year and gained valuable experience that will serve them well heading into next season.

Good luck Marcelo and Jordy!

INDOOR TRACK, Phil Harris:

We had a lot of personal improvement’s this weekend and some big performances from District champion Miles Lanham winning the 300m (breaking the meet record) and the triple jump and Noah Williams winning the Shotput qualifying for the National championship.

Other regional qualifiers are Piero V. 55h , Keira  Dalrymple 1000m, Evan Burita in the 55 dash, Ali Elfaki and Joelle Brew Riverson in the Shotput.

The girls 4x800 relay placing 2nd in thrilling race in Coach Harris’s return and boys 4x200 relay took home 3rd place. The most outstanding effort today has to go to Pamela Moura. Advancing to regionals in the 300m/ long and the triple jump which she also qualified for the Nationals Championship.

SWIM/DIVE, Carmen Lucas:

Swim & Dive competed in the Occoquan Region last weekend with dive Friday morning, swim prelims Friday night, and swim finals Saturday night. Divers Nathan Tran and Morgan Milman competed and took 6th and 13th in the region respectively. 16 of our swimmers competed Friday night, 7 of whom were in individual events. At finals, our relays and swim finalists put in one more shot for their seats in the region and chance at states including Colin McGee in 200 IM and 100 breast, Finn Sample in 100 free, and Noah Popp in 100 back.

Congratulations to Colin McGee on placing 3rd in the region in 100 breast and qualifying for States! We’ll be in Hampton for States on Saturday, February 18.

ORCHESTRA, Director Annie Ray:

Orchestra Concert – Thursday, February 16

This is your reminder that we have our third Orchestra concert of the year on Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 pm

All students are required to attend our concerts for a SUMMATIVE grade. Please note that students must have supplied written notification from a guardian of any absences a minimum of three weeks prior to the concert in order to receive an alternative assignment – this deadline is Monday, February 6.

A reminder that all playing tests can be retaken up to 100% score on Flip up until the concert day. All information for retakes can be found on Schoology in the blue retake folder. Make sure to submit the Mrs. Ray Change My Grade Google Form pinned to the top of Schoology to notify me that it is ready for grading!

Our dress code for the concert is concert black! We will be wearing our Orchestra polos. Please make sure your student has a pair of black dress pants (NOT leggings or jeans), black socks, and black dress shoes to go along with the uniform. If your student needs assistance with obtaining any of these items, we are more than happy to help!

The call time for Philharmonic is 6:00, and for everyone else 6:15. Boosters will be checking students into their rooms as they arrive. Unexcused tardiness will result in a grade reduction.

  • Philharmonic - unpack in Orchestra room and go straight to stage – 6:00 on stage
  • Symphony - unpack in Band room - 6:15 on stage
  • Sinfonia – unpack in Band room - 6:30 on stage
  • Classical – unpack in Guitar room - 6:45 on stage

Bake Sale – Thursday, February 16

Our Pre-Concert Bake Sale is back by popular demand! Last concert, we raised over $600 on delicious treats and that money is being put to great use with sectional coachings, classroom materials, food and fun for the students, as well as end of the year scholarships and awards. Support by signing up to bring items here so we know what holes to fill in our menu.

Orchestra Merchandise – Ongoing

Our long-anticipated Orchestra Merchandise store is LIVE and can be found at tinyurl.com/AHSOrchMerch . We have a ton of items ready to go (with more in the line-up!) with several items able to be personalized.

Supporting Orchestra - Benevity

PLEASE check your corporate policies, many companies filter donations for employees through an entity called Benevity. ANNANDALE HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA BOOSTERS is now registered with Benevity.

Benevity is a company that can help turn your volunteer hours into Donations for Orchestra!!! Please check with your corporate HR to see if your company uses Benevity. If your company does use Benevity, they may either match donations you make to the Orchestra Boosters, or you may simply need to record hours that you participate in orchestra events and your company may provide money to the Orchestra Boosters. (Some companies TRIPLE donations to charities made through Benevity and others offer a certain dollar amount of donation for time you're already spending participating in Orchestra events)

We know that Google, Visa, UPS, Starbucks, Booz Allen Hamilton, Microsoft and Netflix offer these options, but many mor in the area may as well.
