TSA dog and handler with items seized

Criminal Justice VisitsTransportation Safety Administration

Knives, machetes, ghost guns and narcotics found in shampoo are just some of the 1,000’s of items found by the Transportation Safety Administration yearly as they protect our airways, airports, and citizens.  The Criminal Justice students had the chance to visit the TSA on February 1 to see this screening process firsthand.  Students were processed through check points and learned how screeners search passenger items, how the equipment they have detects illegal items and how they monitor the movements of travelers and visitors alike through the airports.  In addition, field trip attendees learned that the TSA provides special access support for dignitaries, famous individuals, and travelers with special needs as each requires specialized and sometimes secretive passageways through to their flights.

Pharmacy students hear from Shenandoah School of Pharmacy

Shenandoah School of Pharmacy speaks to Pharmacy students

Four doctoral candidates and one of the professors from the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University presented to the Level 2 Pharmacy Technician students on February 8, about the pharmacy program they offer.  In addition, the presenters talked about the path they plan to take after receiving their doctorates and why they chose this career path.  At the end of their visit the Shenandoah University guests tried to stump these students with what they thought was a challenging game of Pharmacy Jeopardy.  What they found was that these Academy Pharmacy students were on top of their game and knew the material they were throwing out.  Pretty impressive group of students ready to take on college level pharmacy!

Students visit simulation lab at NOVA MEC

Cadaver Lab Visits for Health and Medical students

Falls Church Academy health and medical science students have been fortunate to have access to the NOVA Medical Education Campus that houses the Cadaver Lab where 100’s of our Academy students have had and will have the opportunity to visit this lab in February and March.  Through the generous donation of individuals giving their bodies postmortem, 1,000's of students learn about the body systems as it has functioned for this individual.  Since the Academy students are learning about the workings and positioning of these organs and systems, being able to see it and touch it as it is in real life, gives them a visual grounding of what they are learning in class.  In addition to the cadaver lab, students also have the chance to visit NOVA's Simulation Labs and learn about the medical courses offered.
