Dear Haycock Families,
It was a busy week! Our sixth grade students did an amazing job on their National History Day (NHD) projects and gave presentations of their learning to each other, parents, and our School Board Member, Ms. Elaine Tholen. This project is the definition of a rich and rigorous task, and it is mentioned over and over by the McLean seniors who come back to Haycock at graduation time as one of their best (and perhaps most challenging) memories of their time here. Kudos to the 6th grade team who did a fantastic job of facilitating and guiding our students with this project.
Our Kindergarten students had fun with the 100th day of school activities on Friday. Our Kindergarten students have come so far in these past 100 days!
We ask for your assistance in monitoring your student's technology use at home on their FCPS laptop. Please see the information below about some county wide changes and what you can do at home to help us teach our students about the appropriate uses of technology.
Finally, please see the information below regarding our required lockdown safety drill which we will conduct this week.
Happy Valentine's Day to all. We talk to our students every day about extending small acts of kindness and care towards one another. This week is Virginia Kindness Week. The purpose of Kindness Week is to recognize that simple day-to-day acts of kindness enable our schools, communities, and state to be a kinder, safer, healthier and more inclusive place to live, work, learn and play.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Google Chrome Update
Today, an update to students’ laptops will be deployed. This update will prevent the use of personal accounts as well as guest profiles in Google Chrome. It will strengthen our web content filters and the use of our school’s laptops as educational tools.
If you’d like to get a better picture on how your student(s) are using their school devices, you can sign up to receive a weekly report of their web browsing activity. As an added feature, you can also sign up for a web portal that allows you to pause the device’s internet activity outside of school hours. More information can be found on the FCPS website: fcps.edu/resources/technology/lightspeed-parent-reports.
Thank you from Ms. Beeda Lee-Pawlawk, our wonderful crossing guard

Lockdown Drill Information
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.
A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based. We are writing to let you know we will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon.
Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.
Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.
