Message from Dr. Khoshaba
Greetings SoCo family,
February is a month full of celebrations! From Black History Month to Valentine’s Day to so many other wonderful events. We have a lot of people and programs to appreciate this month, so here are a few that have already happened:
I appreciate everyone on our staff and in our community, who have put together an inspirational month of activities celebrating Black History Month. From décor to guest speakers to morning announcements and so much more, SoCo is celebrating like nobody else!
I want to give a special shout-out to our amazing School Counselors. Led by Ms. Garrison, these Stallions are the heartbeat that keeps our positive vibes going strong and lifts us up when we’re feeling blue. If you haven’t already done so, please send an email or call your student’s counselor when you have a moment to thank them for their “heartwork.” Here’s the correct spelling of their names if you need it:

Per our students’ and staff’s requests, we continue to work on our school spirit by creating unique murals that display our Stallion pride. Here are two of our most recent creations. Special recognition goes out to Ms. Fischer from the Art department for her tireless energy and hours of service.
Finally, I want to share the ultra-positive vibe that our SGA put together this week. The “PS I Love You” message is a national program that encourages people to stand up against bullying, help end depression, and ultimately prevent suicide. We wore purple in support of this important message, and here are a few pictures of students and staff who participated.
At Friday night’s Boys Basketball Game vs. Lake Braddock, our strong victory enabled us to earn third seed in this coming week’s district tournament! Congratulations to the coaches and these amazing athletes, as well as to everyone who was part of the “hot” crowd that supported them, including our Dance team, families, friends, and staff.
On Saturday, we had some of the most talented singers across our district arrive in Stallion Country as we hosted the District 10 High School & Middle School Honors Chorus. As expected, our SoCo musicians performed beautifully! We had students represented from all four grade levels, and their talent was clearly evident. To say the least, they were music to my ears!

This past week, we had an aquarium arrive for our main office. I highlight this particular item because it is a fantastic resource for our students who have sensory-related situations with which they are living. The bubbles and artificial fish are some of the favorite aspects of the aquarium that people have shared. For me, I love the ability for us to change the colors!
Finally, we are getting close to finishing the course selection process for the 2023-24 school year. Please be sure to talk with your student about the best classes to take. Keep in mind the workload associated with the varied levels of classes (i.e., Honors, AP, etc.), whether they participate in athletics or music, and the pressures of a job if they are employed. We’re very conscientious of the stress that teenagers are experiencing at this time, and they need our help with managing the demands they are facing at school, home, and around the community. Let’s take care of them and each other.

The College Board’s National Recognition Programs’ scholarship applications
The College Board’s National Recognition Programs’ scholarship applications for students open on Wednesday, February 15. You can find information about these opportunities in the student flier. College Board has identified students who are eligible to apply, and students identified by College Board will receive an email invitation from the College Board. Students are also able to nominate themselves by visiting bigfuture.org/NRP.
EARLY RELEASE PROCEDURES
- Report early dismissal by contacting our attendance line at 703-446-1625 OPTION 3 or email us at southcountyhigh.attendance@fcps.edu. By doing this allows our attendance personnel to ensure your child is ready for pickup when you pull up to the curb. Your student will meet you outside.
-
Prior to 8:10 AM, the student must present a note from the parent or guardian to the Attendance Office to obtain a check-out pass. The note must include the reason for leaving school and a contact number for the person writing the note. This procedure allows your child to be ready and waiting for you at the designated time and minimizes interruptions during instructional time.
- If the student does not have a note, then the parent or guardian must call the attendance office prior to 8:10 AM. Please give as much notice as possible. Unscheduled early releases may take up to 15 minutes to have the student dismissed.
- Students must check out at the Attendance Office when leaving school and must check back in at the Attendance Office upon their return.
- Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action.
- Students must contact all teachers for any classes to be missed.

On Monday, we will be sending Debt Notices home to seniors through their Advisory Teachers (and other teachers if your student does not have Advisory)
Please return any textbooks or books from English class from prior years to the Finance Office, not this year’s teachers. Please check in MySchoolBucks for any unpaid course fees from this or the prior year. If there is a chance you owe the library a book, check with the library.
Senior Dues should be paid directly to the Senior Sponsors, before or after school. If the notice says you have a lost laptop, check with the Tech Office. If your senior does not receive a notice, they can ask their advisory teacher, but they need to check MSB and the library on their own. All debts need to be cleared prior to Spring Break.
On March, 9th Finance will be in attendance at the mandatory Senior Meeting, if students want to bring cash or check.
All debts will need to be resolved prior to purchasing a prom ticket and receiving their cap and gown for graduation.
Don't wait!

FAFSA Help
2023-24 College Financial Aid Forms Are Available; College Access Fairfax Is Here to Help
It’s time for high school seniors and their families to complete college financial aid forms. Most colleges require that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) be completed by Wednesday, March 1, to receive the maximum financial aid possible in fall 2023. Some schools have even earlier priority deadlines, so check the individual college’s financial aid office website for deadlines and specific forms to complete. To begin the FAFSA, you will need to create a FSA ID.
A funding opportunity is available for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA; the Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) program. Visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website for help in determining which aid option is right for you.
There are several College Access Fairfax recordings, virtual workshops, and resources available for viewing College Access Fairfax website. College Access Fairfax’s Financial Aid Champions also provide help completing the financial aid forms. To request a one-on-one appointment, please email appointments@collegeaccessfairfax.org.
Families can also contact their high school's college and career specialist or school counselor if they need additional help.
