Tips for Parents Helping Students Learn Math At Home

Math symbols

1. When your children are  struggling with a problem, encourage children by looking for the right mathematical thinking.

2.Math is not a race; do not time your children when they are working on math fluency.

3.Never share with your children the idea that you were bad at math in school or that you dislike it.

4.  Encourage number sense–the ability to separate and put numbers together flexibly-by talking to your child about how you solve math problems.

5. Encourage a growth mindset, the idea that the ability and smartness change as you work more and learn more.
