Every principal should have the experience I had the other day.  As you may know, I have been out on medical leave after knee surgery due to a fall from a ladder, way back in August.  The surgery in December was successful and my time away has been for recovery and healing. 

This past Wednesday was my first day back and it was full of the warmest, kindest welcome back greetings from kids, parents and staff.  The first student I met at the front door early in the morning said, “we missed you.”  Honestly, this reveals more about the wonderful Fort Hunt community than it does me.  I am so glad to be back and working with this beautiful school community.  Thank you for all the well wishes these past three days.  – Mr. Slayter

On another note, Mrs. Pluntke and I want to reiterate how important attendance is as well as arriving on time to school.  Did you know that one criteria for accreditation by the Virginia Department of Education is keeping chronic absenteeism under 15%?  Chronic absenteeism for a student is defined as absent 10% or more of the school year (excused or unexcused).  Right now, more than 15% of our students have been absent over 10% of the year (to date).  This number is improving for us but we are really working to encourage students to come to school every day unless they are ill or have some other very important need to be absent.  Being present in school and arriving on time each day is directly linked to learning. 

Thank you for sending your children to our school!  We love serving, teaching and supporting your children every day.

Todo director debería tener la experiencia que yo tuve el otro día. Como sabrán, estuve de baja médica después de una cirugía de rodilla debido a una caída de una escalera, allá por agosto. La cirugía en diciembre fue un éxito y mi tiempo fuera ha sido para la recuperación y la curación.

El miércoles pasado fue mi primer día de regreso y estuvo lleno de los más cálidos y amables saludos de bienvenida de parte de los niños, los padres y el personal. El primer estudiante que me encontré en la puerta principal temprano en la mañana dijo: "le extrañamos". Honestamente, esto revela más sobre la maravillosa comunidad de Fort Hunt que sobre mí. Estoy muy contento de estar de regreso y trabajar con esta hermosa comunidad escolar. Gracias por todos los buenos deseos estos últimos tres días. – Sr. Slayter

En otra nota, la Sra. Pluntke y yo queremos reiterar cuán importante es la asistencia y llegar a tiempo a la escuela. ¿Sabía que uno de los criterios para la acreditación del Departamento de Educación de Virginia es mantener el ausentismo crónico por debajo del 15 %? El ausentismo crónico de un estudiante se define como una ausencia del 10% o más del año escolar (con o sin excusa). En este momento, más del 15% de nuestros estudiantes han estado ausentes más del 10% del año (hasta la fecha). Este número está mejorando para nosotros, pero realmente estamos trabajando para alentar a los estudiantes a que vengan a la escuela todos los días, a menos que estén enfermos o tengan alguna otra necesidad importante de ausentarse. Estar presente en la escuela y llegar a tiempo todos los días está directamente relacionado con el aprendizaje.

Our Goal: $10,000 school-wide; 400 Acts of Kindness school-wide!

What are we fundraising for?

• Outdoor Garden
• Teacher Appreciation

During this fundraiser, students ask friends and family for donations via the online Raise Craze platform while paying it forward serving others. What a great way for us to teach our students the importance of kindness and gratitude while raising much needed funds. Students will spend time serving, not selling!

School events are run on parent volunteers and we are in need of 3-4 chairs to join our planning team for these two upcoming events so that we can bring these events to our students!  You won't plan anything alone, but we can't do it without you!

Dance Around the World -
Event Date: Friday, March 24th - help coordinate signups for the countries booths; logistics for booths; communicate expectations to booth volunteers

Spring Carnival Silent Auction - 
Event Date: Friday, May 19th - help solicit donations and pick up items; input donation items into the online system; coordinate auction items the day of the event

Targeted and High Impact In-Person Tutoring

FCPS' Department of School Improvement and Support (DSIS) is working with principals across the region to best identify where there is the most need for in-person tutoring to benefit students. The district is recruiting qualified tutors who will be matched to schools based on need.

Are You Interested in Tutoring?

FCPS is now actively recruiting qualified tutors to provide academic support in-person to small groups of students. These new FCPS tutors will be paid an hourly rate of $47.17. The position is flexible, and the number of hours worked and location will be based on the tutor’s availability and qualifications, as well as the needs presented throughout FCPS. Apply now! Note: Current FCPS staff can only apply to tutor outside of their contracted hours.

Tutor.com Is Still Available and Free for All FCPS Students

Online tutoring through Tutor.com is available to all FCPS students as a resource for support and enrichment. As of January 2023, approximately 8,000 students have participated in approximately 34,000 tutoring sessions. Tutor.com remains available to all FCPS students at no cost.
