KJMS Event Calendar
Good evening, Eagle Community,
February certainly began with more than the groundhog seeing his own shadow! Wednesday in the after school program, our students and staff who were still at KJMS did a great job leaving the building so the fire department could check a strange smell in the auditorium. Luckily, it was determined to be a mechanical issue that will be addressed and corrected. Then, our staff and students did a wonderful job during our safety incident on Thursday. We are proud to report that Friday went very well with staff and students back to the important work of focusing on instruction. All of these things are not how one wakes up planning to spend the day. However, the spirit of cooperation and the common goal of student safety prevailed. Thank you!
As we move into this new semester, it becomes the season of signing up for courses while starting new semester classes at the same time. As we focus on continuing to work on our learning goals over the next month, we are happy to continue to offer academic support through after school tutoring. We also have great clubs for students and encourage your child to speak to Mr. Dejo at lunch about how they may be able to plug in to something new.
The weather this weekend appears to be the coldest we have had in a while. I guess that groundhog may have been right! Seems like a good weekend to curl up with a book!
Stay warm,
Dr. Silipigni,
Principal
This week, we focus on the Collaborator attribute. These are the skills your students can show to demonstrate how they are a good Collaborator. Try asking the question this weekend – “How did you help others in your group finish the [activity, project, assignment]?”
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Katherine Johnson Middle School is having a canned food drive during the month of February. Canned items will be collected by science teachers on each team. These items will be donated to different organizations in the Fairfax area. Please send any canned items with your student for them to turn in to their science teacher.
Thank you!

February 6-10 is National School Counseling Week, and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS.
Give a shout out to your school counselors and say why they are great and how they help students.
We are so proud of our AWESOME School Counselors:
Mr. Barnes, Ms. Oeur, Ms. Ranallo, and Ms. Williamson
Kathryn Teague, Director, Student Services
Thank you for all you do for our students, parents, staff and the entire KJMS school community!

Attention Rising Ninth Grade Fairfax High School Families!
Please review the Student Expectations with your student and Parent Requirements on the back of the Course Selection Sheet and sign and return the form to middle school counselors by February 10th.
Student’s Expectations:
- I understand the expectations regarding not only the quantity but the quality of work required in the classes I choose.
- I understand that Honors courses may have summer assignments that I am required to complete.
- I understand that I may not make changes to my schedule after the last day of school (June 16th) except for the following reasons:
- I have too many or too few classes
- Incorrect placement by grade (i.e. placed in English 10 instead of English 9)
- Absence of a required course or pre-requisite not met
I understand that requests to drop any courses require a drop packet which includes showing I have completed all assignments, stayed after school, and/or sought extra help in the course.
I understand that requests for class changes must be approved and will only be considered if space is available at the end of the first quarter.
Parent’s Requirements:
- I have read the course requirements for the courses that my student wants to enroll in.
- I understand the expectations for not only the quantity but the quality of work involved in those classes.
- I understand that the Honors course(s) that he/she wants to enroll in may have required summer assignments.
- I understand the drop policy as stated above in Student’s Expectations and will support that policy.

Due to the cumulative learning loss of students during this pandemic and in order to maximize instructional time, FCPS will implement virtual learning for day 6 and beyond in which school buildings are closed due to inclement weather.
The first 5 inclement weather days will continue to be traditional inclement weather days. Following that, FCPS will utilize flexibility provided by the General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, wherever possible. Virtual Learning on these days will be synchronous instruction following the Inclement Weather Virtual Learning Day Schedule which includes a 2-hour delay.
In the first semester, KJMS students & teachers have borrowed:

The winners of our first Overdue Book Return Competition are the Highlanders and the Hokies! Our MVP Teacher is Ms. Radja, who rounded up an incredible 95% of her students’ overdues in two weeks.
Please keep reminding students to return or renew their books on time. This helps ensure that everyone has access to the books they want.
