A message from Principal Steven McFarlane

Kilmer Community,

We’re excited for our 8th graders to have the chance to visit Marshall and Madison on Friday, March 24. This is a great opportunity for students to get a taste of what lies ahead. This week permission slips were sent home with your student. All 8th grade families please sign the permission slip and have your child return the form to their science teacher.

Also, our 8th graders will be taking a field trip to Finance Park after a unit on financial literacy through their civics class. We are still looking for volunteers to chaperone. Please reach out to Rob Paine (civics teacher) with any questions, For more details, and to sign up, visit: https://www.myja.org/parents/fairfax.

We have a few opportunities to grab take-out and support Kilmer coming up. Consider visiting Foster’s Grille this Sunday, February 26, between 11am-9pm. 20 percent of the all proceeds will go to Kilmer. Additionally, Kilmer’s drama department is having a fundraiser at the Taco Bamba in Vienna on Monday, March 6. Again, 20 percent of sales will go to the drama department. Both opportunities are an easy (and tasty!) way to support Kilmer.

Lastly, we’ve noticed the kiss-and-ride line extending past 7:30 am over the last week. Please work with your student to ensure they are getting to school early enough so that they can arrive at their first period on time.

Have a great weekend, and as always, reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

French I students in Ms. Farrace’s class had the opportunity to connect with students at Mamadou NDACK SECK (Thiès) in Sénégal, West Africa via Zoom. Students spent time asking and answering questions about their respective countries and cultures in both French & English. It was great to learn about another culture and share information about the many cultures we have here at Kilmer.

Finance Park

Dear Parents – we need your help!  After a brief unit on financial literacy taught in Civics classes in the coming weeks, all 8th grade students will embark on a field trip to Finance Park in mid-March to put what they've learned to good use. We are critically in need of parent and guardian support to make this trip a success, and we would really appreciate it if you could join us! Parents who have accompanied us in the past have given very high reviews to the experience and some have even come back in subsequent years to join us again. Please visit https://www.myja.org/parents/fairfax for more details. Thanks in advance for your help!
