HMS, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. The survey is administered to all students in Virginia in grades 6,7, and 8. The purpose of this survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.
The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, and their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them. Students will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed during school and whether they have been bullied themselves. The survey is voluntary, and your child can decide not to participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school by emailing the school registrar, Susanna Fry (smfry@fcps.edu), no later than Monday, February 13th.

In celebration of and to honor Black History Month, students can stop by the library to participate in the "Who Am I?" activity. Each black/even day during the month of February we will put up a new clue on a figure in Black history- student will be able to submit their guess as to who it is and if they're correct they'll be entered into a weekly and monthlong raffle for prizes!
The clue will be up for 2 days before being revealed and a new clue posted, so make sure your student stop by the library often this month!

These students will spend all day rehearsing at Herndon High School on February 10, as well as the morning of February 11. The concert is on Saturday February 11, 1pm at HHS. It is free and open to the public. Come on out to support our singers! They've worked so hard to learn extremely challenging music, and these concerts are always incredible!

The College Partnership Program (CPP) is an enrichment program that supports students in grades 9-12 as they explore, apply to and enroll in college. Students attend monthly school-based meetings focused on academic advising, college visits, parent engagement and preparation beyond high school. Students have the opportunity to visit colleges, explore careers, attend SAT prep courses, and attend a three-day summer college experience. CPP is designed to systematically mitigate the impact of barriers to access, opportunity, and attainment and support students who are from populations that are historically underrepresented on college campuses including:
- Students who are the first in family to attend college in the U.S
- Black or African American students
- Hispanic students, of one or more race
- Students with disabilities
- English language learners
- Economically disadvantaged students

Weight Training w/ HHS Football Coaches will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Archery has moved to Thursdays.

Indoor Field Hockey will take place on Wednesdays during B Block.

Futsal (Indoor Soccer) will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Another day of Volleyball has been added to Thursdays.
- We will have a Student vs. Staff Basketball game after school on February 27. Students will be able to sign up during lunches the week of February 6. Based on the amount of sign ups, we may have tryouts.

Beginning in February, we will have a few volleyball tournaments against other middle schools. Students will be able to sign up beginning on Monday. In order to participate in a tournament, students will need to:
- Sign up during lunches for days of interest.
- Model positive behavior.
- Maintain grades above a C or consistently seek academic support.
- Attend at least one volleyball session a week (Monday or Thursday).
- Have transportation to the tournament(s).

In August, we will offer Hawks 101 for students that will be new to the building next year. One of the most important aspects of this program is our Student Volunteers. They are the ones that help new students feel more comfortable.
We will have sign ups for student volunteers beginning in February. Additional information will be provided in the future.

Institute for the Arts (IFTA) is a 2 or 4-week arts enrichment program for students in rising 7th-12th grade who like to express themselves through the study of dance, fashion, music, theatre, and visual art. With almost 90 classes to choose from, students can immerse themselves in their favorite arts subjects or explore something new. A daily schedule at IFTA consists of four 70-minute classes and a half-hour lunch. Classes are taught in a supportive environment by teachers who are dedicated to high achievement and success. Course offerings are subject to sufficient enrollment. For additional program information, visit the IFTA website or social media pages.
ELIGIBILITY
IFTA is open to students currently in grades 6-11 who will enter grades 7-12 during the 2023-24 school year. Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) students, county residents who are enrolled in private schools or home schooled, and non-Fairfax County residents are encouraged to register.
