week

Our students enjoyed building relationships with Officer Goodley and are actively engaged in learning each day.

Bucknell Families,

We’ve had another great week at Bucknell Elementary School! Students were highly engaged in many learning activities in the classroom. On a daily basis students engage in reading and math workshop where they’re in small group rotations with their teacher. This allows for students’ specific needs to be met so that they can advance in the curriculum. Also this week, we had Officer Goodley visit during lunch from the Fairfax County Police station.  It was a great opportunity to build relationships with students.

In addition, February starts the beginning of Black History month. This is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. History.  We look forward to celebrating this month.

A few other events to look forward in the upcoming week are listed below.

  • Pyramid Night will be at West Potomac High School on Friday, February 10th at 7:30pm. There will be a DJ and prizes as we cheer on the West Potomac Girls Basketball team.
  • Students in PreK - 2nd grade will celebrate Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month on February 17th with a visit from Alexandria Children’s Dentistry

We look forward to another great of instruction and building relationships with students.

Familias Bucknell,

WIDA Testing Has Started!

Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose.

The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The assessment will:

  • Determine students’ English language proficiency level and eligibility for EL services and testing accommodations.
  • Help students and families understand students’ current level of English language proficiency along a developmental continuum.
  • Provide teachers with information they can use to plan for and support student learning.
  • Determine whether ELs have met English language proficiency criteria and will be designated former ELs.

All ELs, including those who have opted out of EL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities.

If you have questions about the annual ELP assessment, please contact the school’s test coordinator for more informati
