Atoms Athletics and Activities (01/30-02/04)

Atoms Athletics & Activities

Atom Nation,

We finish another exciting week of athletics and activities. A lot to be proud of within all of our programs. We begin postseason action with swim and dive competing in the National District meet to complete the week today, while our wrestling and indoor track team compete this upcoming week! We begin to close the door on the winter season but make note below of the first three days of spring sports tryouts! We officially start in a little over three weeks!

We would like to send a huge congratulations to our One Acts team. They took second place in the VHSL One Acts sectional Friday afternoon! They will be moving on to regionals in a few a weeks! Orchestra held their Pizza and Pizzacoto Wednesday evening, that hosted over 260 elementary students! It was a huge success that continues to build our orchestra department!

Our athletic teams and performing arts continue their hard work and dedication to making the Annandale community proud!  As we begin to wrap up our winter season and look forward to our spring seasons, we encourage our community to come out and show their support!

Go Atoms!

Atoms Athletics Highlights

Boys basketball lost two tough games to defending state champion Hayfield and a gritty Falls Church team. They look to right the ship vs Justice and TJ this week.

Girls basketball played hard but got cold at the wrong time during each game vs Hayfield and Falls Church. They travel to Justice and finish the week with senior night vs TJ.

Wrestling held their annual Pack the Pit vs Mount Vernon for senior night on Wednesday. The results weren't what we wanted but the wrestlers battled. A young team with a lot of growth means the future is bright for the grappling Atoms.

Gymnastics prepares for the National District meet Monday evening at Mount Vernon.

Indoor Track prepares for the National District meet next Friday and Saturday evening.

Swim/Dive competed in the National District competition Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Two divers will move on to regionals while many swimmers move to Saturday finals.

We have officially finished our fall seasons with many of our Atoms student-athletes earning postseason All-District and All-Region recognition.  These student-athletes worked hard and their achievements should be acknowledged! Check out the recipients using the link below:

Coaches Corner

Check out what our Atom's Coaches are saying about their programs! Each week our coaches will give a recap, provide a look ahead, or recognize a student-athlete.

BOYS BASKETBALL, Jerome McAvoy:

The Atoms boys basketball team competed hard against Hayfield and Falls Church but came up short in both games. The boys JV team continues to roll they have won 7 out of their last 8. They have a great opportunity to finish the season 12-2 in conference. Coach DeWayne Nelson leadership and guidance has propelled our boys to playing outstanding basketball. The district grind continues next week. We host Justice on Tuesday. It will be a big night for our community as we are hosting the Annandale Boys and Girls Club night.  We expect a great environment.  Any ABGC player who wears their jersey will get free admission and during halftime of the Varsity game, ABGC travel team will play in front of our crowd.  We close the week at Jefferson.

GYMNASTICS, Madison Morella:

Gymnastics is set for the National District Championship Monday at Mount Vernon High School!

WRESTLING, Josh Damico:

The Varsity Wrestling Team had their final match of the year on Wednesday the 25th, Senior Night aka PACK THE PIT where the seniors wear white and the team wrestled under the spotlight. The dual went in favor of the opposing Mount Vernon Majors 45-30, but the young team tried their best to send the seniors out with a win. Senior Marcelo Pozo ran his record to 33-2 with a second period pin; with that pin Pozo has locked the top seed for next weeks district tournament. Others winning matches were Freshmen Charlie McGinity (106) and Adam Khaliqi (113), and Sophomores Dom Vejcik (150) and Jordy Lopez-Funes (157) The Varsity will begin the postseason at Lewis High School on 2/2 for the National District Tournament.

The JV Atoms conclude their season today at the prestigious CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE WORLD! Action starts at 9am.

INDOOR TRACK, Phil Harris:

This week the Atoms Indoor Track team travels to TJ community center for the last regular season meet of competition. We expect some great performances as well as the return of Coach Phil Harris as we also prepare the District championships next week.

SWIM/DIVE, Carmen Lucas:

Dive competed in the National District Dive competition on Thursday. Nathan Tran came away with a third place finish in the boys competition and Morgan Milman finished sixth. Both divers move on to the Occoquan Regional meet next week.  Swim completed the first night of National District Prelims last night with many Atom swimmers moving on to the finals tonight.

Annandale Swim & Dive finished their first two rounds of Districts with Dive on Thursday and Swim prelims on Friday! Our whole team showed out this year with about half qualifying for finals, and several kids qualifying for Regionals in both swim and dive. On to finals tomorrow to see which relays will go.

ORCHESTRA, Director Annie Ray:

It has been a busy week for Annandale Orchestras!

On Wednesday, Annandale HS welcomed 260 Orchestra and String students from our pyramid to our annual Pizza and Pizzicato event. We were honored to have SGM Woods from The United States Army Band clinic with each school and put on an inspiring performance that was standing room only. A huge thank you to our pyramid teachers and Annandale Orchestra students who pulled off an amazing event!

Orchestra students Asia Pham, Melanie Lam, Hector Alvarez, and Alison Coria-Tarazona attended Scott Lang's Music Leadership Symposium on Thursday at Lake Braddock SS. They had the chance to learn leadership skills that apply both in and outside of the music classroom and hear about why music education is so important. A huge thank you to FCPS and Fairfax Arts Coalition for Education for sponsoring this clinic!

Supporting Orchestra - Benevity

PLEASE check your corporate policies, many companies filter donations for employees through an entity called Benevity. ANNANDALE HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA BOOSTERS is now registered with Benevity.

Benevity is a company that can help turn your volunteer hours into Donations for Orchestra!!! Please check with your corporate HR to see if your company uses Benevity. If your company does use Benevity, they may either match donations you make to the Orchestra Boosters, or you may simply need to record hours that you participate in orchestra events and your company may provide money to the Orchestra Boosters. (Some companies TRIPLE donations to charities made through Benevity and others offer a certain dollar amount of donation for time you're already spending participating in Orchestra events)

We know that Google, Visa, UPS, Starbucks, Booz Allen Hamilton, Microsoft and Netflix offer these options, but many mor in the area may as well.
