Edison Academy Families,
It's hard to believe that Wednesday, January 25, marks the end of the second quarter. This is a reminder that on January 25, schools will have a two hour planned early release. Academy shuttles will run for our AM morning and midday classes but not for our PM block. The Construction Technology shuttle will not run on this date at all. There is also no AM shuttle for our Cosmetology students so they will not report on Wednesday.
Please note that Thursday, January 26, and Friday, January 27, are student holidays and there is no school for students. Teachers will be attending professional development and finalizing grades.
Some of our students will be participating in Skills USA competitions on Thursday, January 26, and Friday, January 27. We will be sure to include the results of these competitions in our February newsletter.
Please join us for our Edison Academy Open House on Saturday, February 4, from 10 am - 1 pm. For more details please see below.
We will continue to share important information and good news through these newsletters, our Edison Academy website, and social media platforms, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
Sincerely,
Monica Bentley, Academy Administrator
Student Drivers/Parking
We have had many students parking on Edison High School grounds without a pass; this has been causing a problem with not enough spaces for Edison Academy students who purchased a parking pass.
Effective Monday, January 30, 2023, improperly parked vehicles can be ticketed and/or towed if no parking pass is visible. All expenses associated with towing will be the responsibility of the student's family. If the car is ticketed, the fine is $25.00 and it becomes a student obligation that must be paid.
Shuttle bus transportation is provided for most students between the base schools and the Academy. Students from base schools without shuttle bus transportation or who wish to drive to and from the Academy for their classes, were to complete a parking application. Once approved, a parking pass or Edison Academy sticker was issued to the student for display when parking at Edison High School for Academy classes. Students must park in a parking space in the parking lot nearest door 13, Edison Academy entrance. Students may not double park, park in loading zones, areas not designated for parking, or reserved spaces.
Unfortunately, we do not have any additional parking passes to offer our Edison Academy students for this school year. Requests for exceptions should be sent to Sharon Grimes, Administrative Assistant Edison Academy sgrimes@fcps.edu.

The Cosmetology level II students recently enjoyed an informative and inspiring message from Perry Smith, barber and master aesthetician followed by a demonstration of his clipper skills and a presentation to the Cosmetology teacher of his patented design Smith-Scott micro straight razor specifically designed for precision work and smaller hands.
Mr. Smith shared inspiring words from his own personal story, of joining the United States Marine Corps, followed by working for the US Postal Service in his early years then pursuing his true passion of entrepreneurship and barbering in his 30's.
Mr. Smith shared advice such as:
"Never chase the money, go for what gives you energy, what makes you feel happy. Focus on being your best and what you're really good at!"
"Do it with passion, or not at all!"
"When you love what you do, you're never late to work. Be reliable, consistent and dedicated to your craft."
"Don't get caught up in what society sees as good, popular, or important. "
"Be responsible. Make good decisions. No one is truly bad just someone who makes bad decisions. Know what has to be done and take it seriously and take responsibility to do it."
"Once you value time, you will value life."
Advice on finding the best fit for where to work:
" Find a place where they treat you like family and where you are supported."
"Find a place where the work atmosphere reflects the kind of lifestyle you want for yourself."
"Where you are reflects your value; a bottle of water is worth only a few cents in the grocery store, but at a professional football game it's value is 5 times greater."
United Rentals visited with some of our trades students in the Electrical Construction and Engineering classes to talk about career options for electricians in the power equipment supply chain.
United Rental is the largest rental partner in the world, serving construction, industrial, utilities, municipalities, homeowners and others with safe solutions for transportation to construction, warehousing, and more. Company representatives will be back in the new year to speak to other trades students and to bring out equipment for demonstrations and hands-on learning.
Grooming continues and we are still scheduling dog baths and nail trims! We provide baths, nail trims, ear cleanings and minor trimming (around the feet, face, rear end, sanitary trims). As the year progresses, we may also be able to offer basic haircuts (nothing breed specific). We groom on mostly Wednesdays and Thursdays by appointment. Drop off is between 8:10-8:30 a.m. and pick up is between 1:45-2 p.m. If your dog is in need of a haircut, please take them to another grooming facility for the full cut and we would be a happy to do the in-between baths and trims. Cost range is $15-25 depending on type of dog and services needed. Email Karen Nestlerode at kenestlerode@fcps.edu with your dog's information or any questions.
