Fox Mill Focus January 20

Happy Friday, Fox Mill Families,

We have come to the end of a short week and are looking forward to an even shorter week for students next week. Our teachers will be engaged in two days of professional development.

Japanese New Year and Embassy Visit

On Friday, January 20th, 4th-grade students participating -in the Japanese immersion program welcomed Ms. Aki Regan, the Educational Program Coordinator at the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC), Embassy of Japan. Through Ms. Regan’s presentation, students learned about Japan’s geography, seasonality, technology, such as the “Shinkansen” high-speed trains, and famous festivals and sightseeing spots. Students also learned about Japanese school culture, including students serving lunch and cleaning throughout the school every day. Finally, students had an opportunity to experience some Japanese New Year’s traditions. They wrote wishes for the new year on a paper version of ‘ema’ and tasted mochi rice cake. Otsuka sensei sincerely appreciates the support from the Embassy of Japan and dedicated parent volunteers who helped make the first cultural enrichment since 2020 happen.

Display Case In the Lobby

When next you visit Fox Mill ES, please take a moment to glance in our display case in the lobby at a wonderful roof tile art given to us. Here is a little history about our gift “Dream.”

“Dream”

Written by late former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe

The roof tile art was gifted to Fox Mill in 2015 when then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Mrs. Akie Abe, visited Washington DC to meet with then President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The gift symbolizes the friendship between the United States and Japan and carries on Mr. and Mrs. Abe’s hope for all students at Fox Mill to follow and achieve their dreams. Mr. Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister (2006-2007, 2012-2020).

Cafeteria

We  have been making progress with noise reduction in the cafeteria with added adult supervison. We know that students look forward to relax and unwind, as well as chat with their classmates. While socializing, students must still show respect for their fellow students and keep noise at a  moderate level. We also understand that there are some students who prefer to have a very quiet lunch. For those students, we have made office passes where those students can have a quiet lunch. The pass also allows that student to take a buddy of his/her choice.

Fairfax County Public Schools’ COVID-19 Compensatory Education Plan

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) entered into a Resolution Agreement with the United States Department of Education Office for Civil Rights regarding the provision of services to students with disabilities during the global COVID-19 Pandemic. Students with disabilities are entitled to a free appropriate public education (FAPE) and may require compensatory education as a remedy if a student was not provided a FAPE during the COVID-19 pandemic, an unprecedented time for students, staff, and families across the nation.

The FCPS COVID-19 Compensatory Education Plan was created to support the needs of students with disabilities (SWD) whose learning was impacted during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams and Section 504 Plan knowledgeable committees will determine whether SWD, who had an IEP or 504 Plan during the Pandemic Period (April 14, 2020 - June 10, 2022), received an appropriate education to meet their individual needs during the Pandemic Period. The IEP team or Section 504 Plan knowledgeable committee will also determine whether compensatory education and/related services are owed to SWD as a remedy.

At Fox Mill ES, our special education team will meet with parents of students with an IEP or 504, to discuss further information in depth.
