Dear Bailey's Families,
We've had a busy week at Bailey's! As the 2nd quarter comes to a close, our students have been engaged in reading, writing and math activities that allow them to build new skills and apply their learning to show what they know. You may have heard your children talking about our salad bar. Because this will be our student’s first experience with the salad bar, we spent time this week with each class to help them learn what to expect when the salad bar starts on January 24th. We are excited to give our students access to more fresh fruits and vegetables that they can choose to eat for lunch!
Please remember that Wednesday, January 25th is a 2-hour early release day. Dismissal will begin at 1:45. We will have student holidays on January 26th and 27th. During these days our staff will be busy completing 2nd quarter progress reports, planning for instruction and participating in professional development.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend. As always, thank you for your continued support of our school!

Bailey's Random Acts of Kindness Week
February 12-18
Be on the lookout each week for more information about how classes, families, and our whole school will be celebrating showing kindness for one another and others. During the month of December, our School Counselors provided classroom counseling lessons on what kindness means and how everyone can show kindness to one another. For the month of January, videos are shown through the Bailey’s news show reminding students how they can show kindness at school, home and in the community.
News from the Science Lab
Dear Bailey’s Families,
On Tuesday, March 7th, we at Bailey’s Primary School will be hosting a family science night for all Bailey's students (Primary and BUpper). We are able to host this event due to the generous work of the Children’s Science Center. To help the evening run smoothly, we need to have 18 to 30 adult volunteers. Volunteers will report to the school at 5:15 and the shift will run until 7:45. Volunteers will assist with both setup and breakdown. Please consider donating your time to make family science night a success. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions.
Sincerely yours,
Mr. Misch

FCPS Equitable Access to Literacy Plan
We wanted to share an overview of the vision of the FCPS Equitable Access to Literacy Plan with you since you might have heard the term Science of Reading.
- FCPS is unified in our commitment to a division-wide, comprehensive, and culturally responsive PreK - 12 literacy program that uses evidence-based practices, is grounded in science-based reading research, and intentionally expands learning opportunities in accordance with students’ needs.
- FCPS ensures students receive explicit instruction in reading and writing to achieve proficiency in literacy and eliminate disproportionate outcomes based on race, gender, zip code, ability, socioeconomic status, or languages spoken at home.
FCPS' approach to literacy acquisition is grounded in science-based reading research, implemented through a structured literacy model, and guided by three anchors; The Simple View of Reading (Gough, P. B., & Tunmer, W. E. 1986), The Four-Part Processing Model (Seidenberg & McCLelland 1989), and The Reading Rope (Scarborough, 2001). For more information please click HERE.
School Board Reviews Draft School Year Calendar Options
At their January 17 work session, the School Board discussed draft calendars that were created for the 2023-24, 2024-25, and 2025-26 school years. Draft calendars were developed using the following criteria as a framework:
- Federal, state, and Virginia Department of Education guidance.
- Superintendent’s priorities.
- School Board input.
- Student absentee data.
- Staff absentee data.
- Surrounding jurisdictions’ calendars.
- Survey results.
- Calendar Feedback Committee input.
You may view the draft calendars and other related documents in Boarddocs. The calendars will be presented as new business during the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 26. The Board is scheduled to vote on the calendars during their meeting on Thursday, February 9.

Strategic Plan: Make Your Students’ Voice Count!
Strategic Planning is in process and will incorporate feedback from school staff, families, students, and community partners and organizations. Please encourage your students to participate in this unique opportunity to share their voices.
FCPS is currently seeking secondary students in grades 7-12 who are interested in participating in a Strategic Plan focus group. This focus group provides an opportunity to share feedback in a small group with other FCPS students and a trained facilitator. FCPS is hosting four virtual focus groups for secondary students in February and March:
- February 9, 3:30-5 p.m. or 5:30-7 p.m.
- March 16, 3:30-5 p.m. or 5:30-7 p.m.
Interested students should check their email for a form to sign up for the focus groups. Students will be asked to provide their student ID, so their parents/caregivers can be identified and contacted to ask for consent to participate.
If you have any questions about the student focus groups or you would like to learn more about this opportunity, please contact strategicplan@fcps.edu.
Register Now to Attend a Community Forum!
Check out the schedule of Community Forums and register for the one that is most convenient for you. How Can You Help Your Child Have Good Attendance?
Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.
- Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, make that the expectation.
- Help your child maintain routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Find out if your child feels engaged by his classes and feels safe at school. Make sure he or she is not missing class because of behavioral issues and school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, work with your school.
- Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
- Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
- Encourage meaningful afterschool activities, including sports and clubs.
During the winter season, if missing school is unavoidable, talk to your children’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work. But remember, a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that goes on in the classroom.
