BRUINS ON TRACK

Last weekend was a big one for the Bruins Varsity, JV, and Bruins Run Club squads!!

We dove into the weekend with two meets: one JV Meet at TJMS, and The Virginia Showcase, one of the top Varsity races in the US, where national records are broken.

At TJMS, Coach Beth and Coach Fedor led the Bruins through a number of PRs, with a special shout out to our growing throws team for their continuous improvement! This was a big week for the Bruins Varsity, JV, and Bruins Run Club squads!! Isaiah Jones took first place overall in the Varsity boys 55 meter dash and Patrick Gaffney placed 3rd in the boys 1600 meter run. Lake Braddock’s 4x200 meter relay came in second out of 10 teams, and the boys 4x800 also had a strong performance. We had some good PRs throughout the running events, and kudos to the parents who came out to help the team!

Our Varsity squad took on the VA Showcase with strength, confidence, enthusiasm, and a real desire to succeed. Coach Miller, Coach Roberts and Coach Sias led the away team with an AMAZING team of parents, who drove kids down to VA Beach, shuttled them back and forth to the meet, helped to take care of breakfasts and dinners, cheered the kids on, and supported the team as true coaches would. We cannot thank them enough– the parents who go above and beyond keep making our program stronger! Thank you! Bobby Leone led Friday’s efforts with a PR which won the open mile and landed a golden ticket to states, followed by Christian Bachmann who hammered the 2 mile on Saturday, earning his spot at the VA State Championship. All of our boys who ran the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run hit *major* PRs (Nelson Lattimer, Bobby Leone, Christian Bachmann and Tyler Kimble), and in the 1000 meter run Meba Henok and Timothy Asady-Khani hit huge PRs with a strong supporting effort by Grayson Taylor. Mike Fulton continued his PR streak in the 55 hurdles and Ken Foutohi and Alex Huh hit strong PRs in the boys 55 meter dash.

Madi Lewis narrowly missed qualifying for states in the 500 meter dash, but landed an incredible new PR of 1:18.69, placing 2nd overall– her race was inspiring to watch. Kai Bolme threw in the elite heat of the shot put and landed his new PR of 46-11.5, also narrowly missing that state qualification mark. Grace Whitehouse had solid PRs in the mile and 2 mile, followed by Mikal Berhe also had MASSIVE PRs in both the mile and two mile! Both girls helped to serve as mentors on Sunday for the Bruins Run Club athletes who competed in the middle school races. Becca Duhan ran a fierce 1000 meter run and landed a 10 second PR after last week’s 6 second PR, and Sierra Berkley, Katelyn White, and Sophia Wallace all had awesome PRs in the 300 meter dash. Sierra came back with Kylee Hugart for PRs in the 500 meter dash on Saturday, and they were joined by Katelyn White and Kylee Hugart in a strong 4x400 meter relay effort. Maya Daniels also hit a PR in the girls pole vault.

While the Bruins were hitting PRs, national records were also being broken, and the meet was a challenging and inspiring place to be. We closed the meet on Sunday, with Reagan Leone and Lily Dickinson, our incredible 8th graders who represented the Bruins Run Club and hit PRs in the 1500 meter dash– the Varsity team was in the stands cheering for these amazing young women who will join their team as freshmen next year.

Overall, coaches rate this meet as an A team effort– the Bruins showed the crowd why the Lake Braddock banner hangs high next to other championship banners at the VA Showcase, and West Springfield noted we are the team to watch. We are incredibly proud of these kids, and look forward to our journey into the District Championship!!

Donate old sneakers!

Calling all Sneakerheads!!! Got Sneakers?? We Need them! Join in supporting the Lake Braddock Track Team by donating your old sneakers for recycling! We have partnered with a non-profit called Got Sneakers, to collect used sneakers and make a global impact. Did you know at least 200 million sneakers find their way into US landfills every year? Let's make a difference together and clean out those closets to make room for new kicks!

To help, please place your sneakers (we are not accepting shoes or sandals only sneakers) for donation in a bag and drop them off in the box in the Student Activities Office. Write your name on the list of donors with the number of pairs of sneakers you dropped off and you will be entered to win a prize!
