Atoms Athletics and Activities (01/16-01/21)

Atoms Athletics & Activities

Atom Nation,

It's hard to believe that we're down to the final stretch of the winter seasons with some programs having their district tournaments before the end of January! We have some exciting games and events that we encourage our community to come out and watch. Not to mention, some of those evenings we will be celebrating our senior student-athletes who participate in our various programs.

Don't forget about our winter musical next Friday and Saturday! Our student-athletes and Activities Office continue to work hard to make the Annandale community proud of our programs and athletes!

Go Atoms!

Atoms Athletics Highlights

This weeks recap:

Boys basketball lost a heartbreaking double OT game to Thomas Jefferson Tuesday evening but bounced back in a big way with a convincing win over Mount Vernon last night.

Girls basketball played hard but fell in their games vs TJ and Mount Vernon.

Wrestling hosted Wednesday evening and came away with a 1-1 record on the night, beating Falls Church in their first match but fell to Hayfield in their second match.

Gymnastics hit the mat again with many girls continuing their growth and improvement for the program.

Swim/Dive came up short again TJ in their meet Friday evening but get back in the pool tonight for Senior Night at Audrey Moore.

We have officially finished our fall seasons with many of our Atoms student-athletes earning postseason All-District and All-Region recognition.  These student-athletes worked hard and their achievements should be acknowledged! Check out the recipients using the link below:

Coaches Corner

Check out what our Atom's Coaches are saying about their programs! Each week our coaches will give a recap, provide a look ahead, or recognize a student-athlete.

BOYS BASKETBALL, Jerome McAvoy:

Boys basketball hosted our Readers are Leaders Tuesday evening vs TJ. It was a great night as we continue to build community within the boys basketball program. The crowd was treated to an exciting double OT game. The result wasn't what we wanted but we bounced back with a convincing win over Mount Vernon last. We hit the floor with games at Edison and senior night Friday vs Lewis.

GYMNASTICS, Madison Morella:

Atoms Gymnastics competed at Thomas Jefferson this week with athletes competing on all events.  Abrish Antezana competed her new floor routine for the first time.  Kaylee Rivera scored her highest beam score with 0 falls.  Erika Villarroel also scored her highest on beam.  Girls compete next Wednesday at Lake Braddock.

WRESTLING, Josh Damico:

The Grappling Atoms hosted Falls Church and Hayfield Wednesday evening in the Pit. The Grappling Atoms came away with a win in the first match vs Falls Church but fell to Hayfield in the second match. The Atoms have a few injuries to heal up over the next couple of weeks but look poised and ready as we prepare for the District Tournament in February.

We host our annual Atoms Wrestling Tournament next Saturday, January 21. Come out and support!

INDOOR TRACK, Phil Harris:

This week the Winter Track Team continues to prepare for the next couple of meets in two weeks. One at TJ Community Center and the other at the Montgomery Invitational. Also continue to wish Coach Harris a speedy recovery and hope to see him back soon doing what he loves.

SWIM/DIVE, Carmen Lucas:

This week we have a big double-meet weekend against TJ on Friday and Edison on Saturday where we’ll also celebrate our seniors with senior night! It’s been almost a month since our last meet and we are excited to head into the last stretch of the season.

Department of Bands Pyramid Concert February 23 at 7 pm in the Auditorium.

ORCHESTRA, Director Annie Ray:

Supporting Orchestra - Benevity

PLEASE check your corporate policies, many companies filter donations for employees through an entity called Benevity. ANNANDALE HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA BOOSTERS is now registered with Benevity.

Benevity is a company that can help turn your volunteer hours into Donations for Orchestra!!! Please check with your corporate HR to see if your company uses Benevity. If your company does use Benevity, they may either match donations you make to the Orchestra Boosters, or you may simply need to record hours that you participate in orchestra events and your company may provide money to the Orchestra Boosters. (Some companies TRIPLE donations to charities made through Benevity and others offer a certain dollar amount of donation for time you're already spending participating in Orchestra events)

We know that Google, Visa, UPS, Starbucks, Booz Allen Hamilton, Microsoft and Netflix offer these options, but many mor in the area may as well.

Our Athletic Trainers, Ryan Hughes and Kathy Ayers, work really hard behind the scenes of our Athletic events and they would like to share some tips and advice they give the student-athletes at Annandale High School everyday.

TIP OF THE WEEK

It’s important to prepare before a game. But maintaining a healthy diet with a good balance of calories that includes carbs, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals will keep you in your best shape all season and all year. Don’t forget to stay well-hydrated throughout the day, every day.
