Floris Families,
Welcome to February and the first week of the third quarter. We look forward to seeing families tonight at the PTA Movie Night in the café.
The Floris PTA has redesigned their website and has information on upcoming events including the PTA Meetings and the Science Fair. Check it out here http://florispta.org/.
We know it has been a mild January, and as we see the cold can return quickly. Just a reminder that unless there is a wind chill advisory or warning, falling precipitation, single digit temperatures, and/or the playground is snow/ice covered, our students go outside for recess. Please make sure that your child is dressed for the conditions. It is important for students to get outside and play during the school day.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Rob Gibbs, Assistant Principal, ragibbs@fcps.edu

Soaring Eagles
We truly appreciate all our Floris staff and would like to give the community the opportunity to say thank you and/or show their gratitude for all of the effort the Floris Staff is putting in day and night!
Floris Soaring Eagles can be compliments, kudos, etc. for our staff. What a great way to show your appreciation! We will share the Soaring Eagle with the staff members. To submit a Soaring Eagle to a staff member, please fill out this form!
Thank you for helping to recognize our amazing staff!

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
February 6-10 is National School Counseling Week, and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS.
Please send your thank you's and kudos to our fabulous counselors, Sarah deKramer and James Duffield!

Eating Disorder Parent Information
In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a webpage with detailed information and resources to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2022), “Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Eating disorders are not fads or phases, and can have serious consequences for health, productivity, and relationships.”

We will provide in-person classes both before and after school. The classes will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We are thankful for your consideration of doing this and please share with others that may be interested.

Digital Citizenship Corner
We're fortunate to have access to many amazing apps, websites, and devices to connect our students with learning across the globe. However, it's important to reinforce digital citizenship skills consistently to ensure everyone is safe, responsible, and productive. For the next month, we will be highlighting some resources to encourage super digital citizens, at school and at home.
With access to many devices inside and outside of school, it is vital to establish expectations at home. Learn about a four-pronged approach to supporting your child's technology use! For reference, the image to the below is the background on all student laptops at Floris and represents our schoolwide expectations. Consider using this as a point of reference when setting your own expectations at home.

“Collaborative and Proactive Solutions”
Engaging Cooperation
We had a great discussion together in January about listening with empathy and validating feelings to help us engage with our children. We want to continue the conversation. We welcome all who are available to participate, even if this is your first time.
The format will be the same: Bring your lunch if you want, and we will enjoy more collaborative conversations on how we can all work together to support the social and emotional needs of our Floris students. We look forward to meeting with you!
Sincerely,
Sarah de Kramer, James Duffield, and Maggie Seneca
Please RSVP to Maggie Seneca, maseneca1@fcps.edu, if you plan to attend.
