Our strings and chorus students had the opportunity to perform with fellow Falls Church pyramid elementary schools this week. We thank Ms. Hoffman and Ms. Ragona for coordinating these amazing experiences for our 5th and 6th grade students.

Dear Woodburn Families,
We have been revisiting our R.O.A.R. motto and beliefs as we begin 2023. This week we focused on "R - Recognize your value." As we remember the great contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we encourage you to ask your child what values and traits they admire about themselves.
One of our favorite children's books about Martin Luther King Jr. is Martin's Big Words. We hope you might enjoy it with your family over the long weekend.
Together We Grow,
Katy and Elizabeth

Virginia Readers’ Choice (VRC) Program
The Virginia Readers' Choice program encourages students to read or listen to a variety of high-quality children’s books. Ten books are nominated by the Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) in several categories: primary (grades K-2) and elementary (grades 3-5), and middle (grades 5-6). Students across Virginia read the books and vote for their favorites at the end of March. The winners are announced in the beginning of May. At Woodburn, students in the primary grades listen to the books as they are read aloud during library lessons.
Students in grades 3-6 are invited to participate in a challenge to read the elementary or middle chapter books independently after being introduced to them during their library classes. Students who read four of the following books and write a review will get their name on the Wall of Fame. Students who read ten of the elementary or middle books and write reviews will get their name on the Wall of Fame and get invited to a pizza party to celebrate their achievement!
For more information and a list of titles, visit the VRC website: https://www.vsra.org/virginia-readers-choice-program, or contact our librarian, Ms. Lockwood at mllockwoodgo@fcps.edu.
SEL Screener Information
|
Families of students in grades 3-6 who completed the SEL Screener during the fall window will be receiving a mailed report of the survey results this month. The survey offers valuable information about a student’s SEL skills, relationships, school environment, and well-being. Parent and guardians can use the Family Guide to understand your student’s SEL Screener outcomes and facilitate discussions at home about the results. If you have further questions and/or concerns, please feel free to reach out to a member of the Woodburn Elementary School Wellness Team.

WIDA Assessment
Woodburn Elementary School will be administering the WIDA assessment January 17th through March 17th. If your child qualifies for the assessment, you will receive a letter in the mail.
Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English Learners (ELs) participate annually in an English Language Proficiency assessment. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs to monitor students' progress in acquiring academic English. The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is administered to all students in grades K-12 with an English language proficiency (ELP) level of 1-5 and 9. The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English language development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
If you have any questions, please contact our School Testing Coordinators Elizabeth Watson (evwatson@fcps.edu) and Kelley Dauberman (krdauberman@fcps.edu). Our ESOL Lead Teacher, Rebecca Wilkinson (rwilkinson@fcps.edu) , is also available to answer questions in regards to the WIDA assessment and ESOL services.
