Principal's Message

Hello Shrevewood Families,

Our 3rd and 4th grade students did a great job taking their Reading and Math VGA this week and our 5th and 6th graders will take their assessments next week.

As a reminder, Monday is a holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We also have the end of the quarter nearing on Wednesday, January 25, which is a 2 hour early release day. Thursday and Friday, January 26 and 27 are student holidays.

We hope you all have a wonderful three day weekend!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Combined Fall and Winter VGA score reports will be delivered to families via U.S. Mail as soon as possible after all Winter VGA tests are completed. The anticipated delivery timeline is late February or early March 2023. The intention of combining this VGA reporting is to make it easier for families to view growth in the Vertical Scaled Scores (VSS) from fall to winter and to compare the student’s VSS results to the end-of-year proficiency target. More information pertaining to the VGA can be found here.

If you have any questions about the VGA, please email Katie Vandawalker at kmvandawalke@fcps.edu.

Girls on the Run at Shrevewood - Coaches Needed!

We need coaches to support the Spring 2023 Girls on the Run (GOTR) Season at Shrevewood! At this time, we are just recruiting coaches. Participant registration for students in grades 3 through 6 will open in February. Practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Shrevewood, beginning March 7. The end-of-season 5K will be the weekend of May 20-21. To learn more about coaching visit the GOTR website or email Molly Sherlock

Last week to sign up for Before/After School Programs through 1/15

Do your kids like sports? Legos? Do they have an interest in cooking? Science?

Shrevewood PTA is pleased to offer before and after school programs again with our partner, Baroody Camps, Inc. See all of this winter's offerings here. Classes will run from January 23 - March 24.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr., schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 16th. We invite you to explore a service opportunity with your family during this Weekend of Service. FCPS is collaborating with Volunteer Fairfax for this weekend of service to provide service opportunities for all ages January 14-16. Volunteer Fairfax has updated their website and additional details can be found here.

Calendar Reminder: Quarter End

As a reminder, Wednesday, January 25, is the last day of the quarter and a two-hour early release for students. Also, schools are closed for students on Thursday, January 26, for a staff development day and Friday, January 27, for a teacher workday. See the complete 2022-23 School Year Calendar.

Student Transfer Renewal Applications Open February 15

A student transfer is valid for one year only. A parent or guardian must submit a renewal application each year for student transfer consideration. A renewal application may be submitted for students who continue to meet the same student transfer criteria as indicated on the original student transfer request. For students no longer meeting the same student transfer criteria, a new transfer request must be submitted.

All students will be considered eligible for student transfer renewal unless the principal indicates a student is not eligible for renewal or the transfer type does not allow for renewal e.g. graduating, moving from one level to another, or family relocation.

Letters from the principal will be automatically generated from the online student transfer application in February for students eligible and not eligible for renewal and sent to the enrolling parents primary email address.

For detailed information regarding the renewal process, please visit the Online Student Transfer Application: Renewal Process webpage

Next week, our Positivity Project lessons in Morning Meeting will be focusing on the perseverance character strength. Perseverance means you complete what you start despite obstacles. You never give up.

Questions that you can discuss with your child include:

  • How have you shown perseverance in your own life?
  • Is it always easy to overcome challenges?

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

We will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.
