Positivity Project for January 7-13: Prudence

P2

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Prudence. Prudence means you plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices.

Prudence is the ability to do the right thing for the right reason, at the right time. It’s a future-oriented way of thinking that helps a person set goals, make plans, and have the discipline to accomplish them. It is cognitive -- more a strength of the head than of the heart.

Prudence supports effective individual self-management. Whether aspiring for an athletic record, academic grade, or purchasing a car, foresight and planning are necessary. However, even with a plan, long-term goals can only be obtained by overcoming those impulses and desires that steer you away from your goals. Prudence provides the wisdom to know which character strength to leverage, at which time, to achieve your desired end state.

To practice and encourage the character strength of prudence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions. Have a wonderful week!

Message from the Parklawn PTA

pta

Happy New Year from the Parklawn PTA! This month we'll be featuring some "PTA resolutions" to help you support the PTA and our activities. Resolution #1: Use Amazon Smile for shopping, and Amazon will donate a portion of eligible purchases to the Parklawn PTA! Visit smile.amazon.com and sign in with the same account you use for Amazon.com. Select Parklawn Elementary School PTA as your charity. Then, shop at smile.amazon.com to generate donations for Parklawn PTA. Amazon Smile offers the same products at the same prices as Amazon. Any funds the Parklawn PTA receives are put toward programs for our school, such as family bingo night, a science night, and teacher appreciation activities. If you have any questions about the Parklawn PTA, email us at parklawnpta@gmail.com.

Message from the Office of Student Safety and Wellness: New Year’s Resolutions

In December, many people will head to their local Target or Michaels to find a new planner. The crisp, fresh feeling of new paper to write new and improved goals gets some of us excited. When thinking of your goals consider making them SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound), this method breaks your goals down into specific objectives and makes it easier for you to track your progress. What goals would you like to share with your child, to show them examples of healthy adult introspection? Introspection, looking within, is necessary to learn how to manage stress in a healthy manner. What regular coping skills can be implemented into your daily/ weekly routine? Some goals may be physical, spiritual, financial, or emotional. Would it be easier to have serious conversations over a family dinner? Or maybe regular family dinners, spark joy and connection that’s often missing.

Research has shown that family therapy is the best treatment option for young people who misuse drugs and alcohol (SAMHSA). Many people use drugs to manage life’s hardships when they feel disconnected from themselves or others. The opposite of addiction is connection, and young people benefit from connection with their families. Families who have a common mission based on autonomy and openness instead of secrecy and silence thrive. Families teach young people how to manage stress when they communicate honestly and openly with one another. Learning how to manage stress early in life could be a major factor in whether or not a young person decides to use drugs.
